Whose Side Are You On?
Super Bowl Sunday puts me in mind of a story that the late Fr. Bill Dawson sometimes used in homilies. He told of Jesus attending a college football game that featured the  Protestant Punchers verses Catholic Crusaders. It was the biggest rivalry of the season. Sitting in the stands, Jesus cheered loudly as the Crusaders scored first. Then the Punchers scored, tying the game. Jesus jumped up in his seat with joy. The man sitting directly behind him displayed a puzzled frown on his face.  He tapped Jesus on the back, and said, “Good man, which side are you rooting for?”  “Neither', was his answer, “I’m just enjoying the game.”  The man sneered to his neighbor, “Hmm, another atheist!”
When it comes to rooting for a team in this year's Super Bowl, I feel a little bit like Jesus in the imaginary story. I am not on either side of this year's Super Bowl.  Apart from a break in the game to preside at the 6:30 mass, which without too much disappointment, may keep me from the halftime show, I'll likely just enjoy watching. Maybe there is a lesson here for life itself.  If on a regular basis more of us expressed delight in the accomplishments and joys of others, rather than looking for accolades for ourselves, we'd more quickly come to the realization that we are all in this venture of life together. A winning football coach once said that he used the following three fundamental principles for developing team spirit: 1) If anything goes wrong, I did it. 2) If anything goes fairly well, then we did it. 3) If anything goes really well, then you did it.  Try it.  This approach might make life more enjoyable.  More importantly, it helps us remember that we are all on the same team. ---Fr. Chuck

May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious,
and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world.
Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.

Brigid you were a voice for the wounded and the weary.
Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens.
May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit. Amen

A Silence Louder than Words
Sometimes the work of overcoming hatred in our world seems like a game of “whac-a-mole.” Just when you think you’ve overcome one awful encounter with bigotry, another angry event pops up in front of you. That’s exactly what seems to be happening this week. As we conclude a celebration of Civil Rights Week at SAU, honoring those who endured so much for the struggle to gain equal rights for all human beings in our country, we are made aware of planned protests in our community from members of the Westboro Baptist Church. This group, which by the way is neither Baptist nor a church, preaches a message of hatred and divisiveness wherever they go. But their attempt to divide people seems to have had an opposite effect in the Quad Cities.  Leaders of Christian churches in our area are standing together with each other and with leaders of others faiths promoting a message of peace and respecting our nation’s prized freedom of speech, with a response of staying silent. Silence, in this instance at least, is a positive response. It’s a display of choosing not to return hate for hate.  And silence is a refusal to give this hate group the attention that merely feeds their vitriol.
What lessons are we learning from this experience?  First, that that we can be strongly united when we are faced with situations aimed to divide us. The unity of all people of faith and good will is an incredible force for good. As Imam Saad Baig of the Islamic Center of the Quad Cities said this week, “Showing this support for other faith communities makes it clear that this is a peaceful community. This response makes the strength of our relationships in this community solidly clear.”
Secondly, we learn that although we should never shy away from confronting intolerance, when all else fails, silence may be the best response. Sometimes nasty, negative, and outrageous things are best not dignified by any other action.  If it only worsens a situation to by confronting someone who persists in the use of racist, homophobic, sexist, or other stereotypical jokes and slurs, then a protest of walking away is a very courageous way to respond. If we have learned such things from this experience, this Civil Rights Week will have been an exceptionally educational one for all of us.  ---Fr. Chuck

•Brewed Awakening
Discussion this week will be “Stepping into Service,” and feature students sharing their experiences from past service trips.  With the spring break service trips deadline quickly approaching, former service trip students will discuss how engaging in service can impact the lives of others and ourselves. Awakening Our Humanity
Monday our nation honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a federal holiday. It is often suggested that MLK Day should not  just be a day off from classes or from business as usual. Instead, it is a day to realize that we each have a role to play in creating lasting change in our community. Perhaps the beginning of that is the realization that our humanity is tied to every other human being.  This thought was expressed eloquently at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony by the rapper, Common, after he and singer John Legend won the award for their song, "Glory," from the movie Selma.  Talking of his experience filming the movie, Common said, "The first day I stepped on the set of Selma, I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie. As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights movement, I realized, I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity..."
May Civil Rights Week at St. Ambrose help awaken the humanity in each of us and help us realize what Dr. King said, "We are all tied in a single garment of destiny."    ---Fr. Chuck

Students, faculty, and staff who wish to offer a memory or share a note of condolence are invited to do so using paper provided in the chapel Gathering Space.
