Putting Our Hearts into What we Do
One of the stories I sometimes share from my days as a pastor in a parish in the western part of the Davenport Diocese took place on a cold winter morning with several inches of new snow on the ground. My radio alarm clock awoke me to announcements of school cancellations due to the storm.  As I walked over to the early morning mass, expecting no-one to be there, I looked up to see a delightful 80-year old woman.  One who rarely ever missed, she was waiting prayerfully in a pew near the front of the church.  Conflicted about whether I should praise her faith or scold her for venturing out on a such a day, I simply said, “How did you possibly get here today?” Her response was golden. She smiled and said, “Well, once I got my heart here, it was easy to get the rest of me here.”  In her wisdom, Marcella teaches a valuable lesson. As we begin a new academic year, one of the worst things we could do would be to approach all the opportunities that are before us half-heartedly or worse, not at all. Instead, I hope each student will put his or her heart into being an Ambrosian---someone who joins in; someone who takes the opportunity to learn seriously; someone who is open-minded and generous to others. You will be enriched to the very degree you help enrich the lives of others. Put your heart into what you do, the rest will follow.    ---Fr. Chuck

•Mass Schedule
We resume our academic year mass schedule today with both Sunday masses at 10:30 am and 6:30 pm.  Daily mass is offered Monday and Friday at 12 noon, Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 pm and Wednesday at 9:15 pm in the Grotto if weather permits. The simpler (about 25 minutes) daily mass provides a great way to recharge your spiritual batteries during the week. In addition, the chapel is open for all Ambrosians for quiet reflection from 7 am - 10 pm daily.

•BEE Involved! Sign Up
This Sunday, August 30 you can sign up for the various ministries and activities of Campus Ministry at both the 10:30 am and 6:30 pm masses. A WELCOMING HOME
We extend a warm welcome to all new and returning students to the St. Ambrose University community. We hope that all new Ambrosians quickly come to discover that SAU is a "home away from home.” There are many individuals in every part of campus ready to assist students. In fact, so often visitors to campus comment on the  spirit of welcome and helpfulness they find here.  It is something we do well, in part, I believe, because of our diocesan heritage. It’s a charism, a unique characteristic of St. Ambrose as an academic community rooted within a local community and diocese. This week new Ambrosians become a part of that community. Earlier this summer, Pope Francis issued a highly anticipated encyclical letter on the care of the earth entitled, Laudati Si, or Praise Be to You in English. Along with many challenging things, the pope also reminds us that there are many little things we can all do to make our communities a home for all. Borrowing an insight from Saint Therese who spoke of the "little way of love," he reminds us that there is power in kind words, a smile, and small gestures that bring us together in peace. He writes, "An integral ecology is also made up of simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness.” (Laudati Si, Paragraph 230). We all have a part to play in creating a home where all are welcome.  We in Campus Ministry send this email bulletin each week to help you be aware of some of the opportunities available for you to engage with students in the process of spiritual and personal growth. We hope you'll find yourself feeling at home the minute you step onto campus. We hope you'll in turn contribute in many small and large ways to make St. Ambrose and the world around us home for all.  A hearty welcome to all and prayers for blessing on a great year!   ---Fr. Chuck
