The Light Darkness Cannot Overcome
There is a TV advertisement circulating the web these days that originated in England. Although it is meant to promote Amazon Prime, it promotes something ever so much more. The ad shows the friendship between a Catholic priest and a Muslim Imam. As the two share a cup of tea, they rise from their chairs to discover they also share a common problem--bad knees--which prompts a gift of knee pads, ordered and sent one to the other through the online company being advertised. The message carries a beautiful sentiment so desperately needed today. For example, after all the ugly political rhetoric leading up to the presidential election in our country and after the Brexit vote in Great Britain, Dictionary.com revealed recently that they word chosen to best summarize 2016 is xenophobia (defined as a fear of, or hatred of, foreigners or of that which is foreign or strange).  Because of the factions that have been exposed in our world, it might be especially important this year as we tell the Christmas story not to leave out the part in Matthew's gospel where visitors to the newborn Christ child include the magi, a mysterious class of gentile foreigners and practitioners of a peculiarly different religion from the one the inhabitants of the land they were visiting practiced. Yes, the magi teach us at Christmastime that everyone is welcome in God's Kingdom. They symbolize our need to learn that God excludes no-one and neither should we. While darkness is real in our world, the advertisement I mentioned and the witness of so many who generously serve the less fortunate, remind us that because of Christmas, it will never get so dark that you can't see the light. So as we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may the Light coming into our world renew us in the work of peace for all---for our Muslim, our Jewish, our fellow Christian brothers and sisters; for those of all religious traditions and for those of none. Together may we learn to find common solutions to our problems through the gift of membership in God's family. It is, after all, the true meaning of Christmas. God is now brother to us in Christ Jesus and are we are now brothers and sisters to each other. Congratulations to our graduates.  A blessed season of peace to all!   ---Fr. Chuck

WAIT FOR IT….
Barely have we consumed the of last of our Thanksgiving dinner leftovers and we enter the Christian season of Advent. Although it’s never easy to celebrate Advent when the world around us has jumped ahead to Christmas and when at a university setting our lives are consumed with final projects, exams, and papers. But try to pay some attention to it. The daily readings of the Advent Liturgy are so powerful reminding us that a new day is promised to us by God. The prophetic imagery is so wonderful. The lion and lamb will lie down together, the sword will become a plowshare, all people will share in a feast, death will be destroyed forever. Advent gives us the faith to believe that the impossible is possible. By being attentive to the longing of our hearts, we can even learn to recognize the ways God is already working to bring that day to a reality. We learn to live with a promise in our hearts that guides toward the future without the need to know exactly what it will look like. The inventor of the television, Philo Farnsworth once said, "Impossible things just take a little longer." Don’t lose hope. Good things will arrive.  In these next four weeks before the celebration of our Savior’s birth, may we never forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. Happy Advent.
---Fr. Chuck

Recalling God’s Bounty
This two-week bulletin takes us to Thanksgiving, a celebration that may especially have important significance for our nation now that we have concluded a particularly harsh election season. Despite how your feel about the outcome, it is especially important to recall that our deepest security comes not from fragile and imperfect human leaders. Our deepest joys and hopes are in God who created us and called us to be responsible stewards of the world and to love as he loved us. And knowing how imperfectly we have done that, we are compelled to return to God with gratitude for sustaining us and for hope for the future.  I am reminded of the roots of a hymn that is sung in many churches this time of year. Composed by a Lutheran pastor named Martin Rinkart during a time when a deadly plague overcame his village and caused him to have to conduct up 50 burial services a day. Those deaths included even members of his own family.  Amazingly, during so much pain, he found the grace to compose the words to the hymn, "Now Thank We All Our God."  The second verse may especially have meaning for many in our own day:
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed;
And free us from all ills, in this world and the next.
Despite whatever we find ourselves dealing with, may we recall the bounteous nature of God's love and care for us and may gratitude and hope fill our hearts. A blessed Thanksgiving to all.  ---Fr. Chuck

•Thanksgiving Break Schedule
Due to Thanksgiving break, there will be no Sunday or daily masses celebrated from Sunday, November 20 through Saturday, November 26.  There is also no 10:30am mass on Sunday, November 27.  Regular mass schedule will resume with 6:30pm mass on Sunday, November 27.  Thanksgiving blessings to all.

•Month of All Souls
In the Catholic Tradition the month of November is a time to pray for our deceased loved ones.  All month we keep a candle at the front of the altar with the names of the deceased loved ones of SAU students, faculty, and staff.    If you would like to add the names of your deceased loved ones, you can still fill out a card in the Gathering Space and place it before the altar.  We will remember them all in our prayers at every Mass.

•Project Renewal Giving Tree
Students from Music Ministry invite you to take an ornament from the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space this weekend before going home for break.   Each ornament has the name, age and interests of a child at Project Renewal.  We ask you to buy a new book, puzzle, and/or board game for that child and return it to the Gathering Space by December 7th.  The gifts will be delivered to the kids at Project Renewal during Finals Week.  Thank you for your generosity!

•Service with From Cover to Cover
Ambrosians for Peace & Justice will be volunteering with the organization From Cover to Cover on Tuesday, November 15th from 2:30-5:00 at Madison Elementary.  From Cover to Cover is a children’s literacy organization, and the event on Tuesday is a Family Literacy Night to encourage reading at home.  Let us know at ministry@sau.edu if you would like to join us.

•Music for the Feast of St. Ambrose Mass
The next rehearsal for the Feast mass is Monday, November 14 at 6pm in the Chapel.  All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate.  Contact Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu if you would like to help out.

•New Hymnals in the Chapel
As you come back from Thanksgiving break, you will notice something different in the Chapel - new Gather Third Edition hymnals.  We hope that this new hymnal - containing songs both old and new, along with new settings of the mass that correspond with the most recent edition of the Roman Missal - will help us continue to promote “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy through our collective prayer and song!

We are offering the opportunity to dedicate hymnals for $20 each.  The inside cover will be imprinted with the name of the person(s) being honored.  A great way to commemorate family and friends.  Contact us at ministry@sau.edu to learn more.

•Advent Season Events

→Plan to take part in the Student Candlelight Mass preceding Midnight Breakfast on Tuesday December 13 at 9:00pm.  In the chapel, filled with light from candles held by students, we celebrate the mystery, the joy, and the hope Christ’s birth has brought to our world.  All are welcome to each of these events.

•Winter Break Service Trip in Mississippi!
Spend the last week of your winter break in service down south with Sacred Heart Southern Missions in northern Mississippi.  From Monday, January 9th to Saturday, January 14th, we’ll spend time repairing low-income homes and preparing meals at a community kitchen.  Find more information and applications (due December 7th) in the Chapel Gathering Space and Lower Chapel, or contact Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu.

Not So Insignificant
It has been a history making week. Who could have predicted, that after 108 years, the Chicago Cubs this year would have won the Word Series? With a general election on Tuesday, one way or another, the upcoming week will be even more historic. But many little things that may seem insignificant to us at the time also hold the promise of having lasting significance toward a better world. For example, things like casting a vote in Tuesday's election may seem like a rather tiny thing for an individual, but it can have lasting implications for the whole world. Raking leaves for an elderly neighbor for Sunday's Bee the Difference Day, or donating a piece of clothing you no longer wear that can be sold to raise money for the homeless for Hunger Week seems insignificant, but offers a treasured gift for the person who is helped. We shouldn't belittle even the very little things like a warm and friendly smile, a compliment, a gesture of welcome, or holding a door for someone. The American author, Carl Sandburg told of two men exchanging gossip in a general store in Hardin County, Kentucky, one day in February, 1809. "Anything happen over the last week?" one asks. "No," answers the other, "nothing's happened. Oh, except there's a new baby down to Tom Lincoln's house. A boy, I think." That baby boy grew to be America's greatest president. Little things can make a big difference.  An unknown poet wrote:
  Great events we often find,
On little things depend,
And very small beginnings
Have oft a mighty end.
We can each make a significant difference. Please, don't neglect doing a good things because it seems small. It could even produce an incredible result. ---Fr. Chuck

•Be Sure to Vote!
Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day.  All St. Ambrose University students who wish to vote in Scott County can do so on campus - the Rogalski Center is a polling place for Scott County.  Polls will be open from 7am until 9pm on November 8.  You can register to vote and vote on the same day in Iowa as well - if you are not yet registered, simply bring a proof of identity (driver’s license, passport, student ID) and proof of residence (such as your Res Life housing contract) to the poll.  You can find more information, including details about voting absentee, at the Dean of Students website.  As Pope Francis has said, “We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that their leaders can govern.”

STILL THE SAINTS
Celebrations of Halloween will likely capture the attention of many Ambrosians this weekend. It’s good to be reminded that “All Hallow’s Eve” has its religious origin as the vigil of the Feast of All Saints. Ambrosians have a unique claim to being saints. In Fr. McDaniel’s history of St. Ambrose, “A Great and Lasting Beginning,” we learn that before our athletic teams were called the Bees, we were known as the St. Ambrose Saints. I like the bee as a mascot because of its symbolic ties to St. Ambrose of Milan, but I also like to think that we are still SAU saints. After all, sainthood is what people of faith aspire to. A poster I once saw in a parochial school classroom said it this way, “A saint is a sinner who keeps on trying.” And that’s a good description of all of us, who with God’s grace keep striving for holiness. Pope Francis said something similar in his first interview as pope when asked who he really was.  He answered, “I am a sinner…but I trust in the infinite patience and mercy of God.”  And so do we. Like Chicago Cub fans who have waited a long time to find their team in the World Series, and even longer to win it all, we never lose hope. In that sense, we are still the saints. With faith in God’s infinite mercy, our ultimate victory is assured. So we keep on trying. Happy Halloween. Happy All Saints Day.   ---Fr. Chuck

•Remembering Our Deceased Loved Ones Throughout November
In the Catholic Tradition, the month of November is a time to pray for our deceased loved ones.  We invite all Ambrosians to acknowledge the deceased who have been close to you by writing their names on cards which will be available in the pews and in the Gathering Space this weekend.  Please place the filled out cards in the basket provided in the Gathering Space.  They will be placed before the altar and remembered at all of our masses throughout the month of November.  In the words of St. Ambrose of Milan, our patron, “We have loved them in this life. Let us not abandon them until we have conducted them by our prayers into the house of the Lord."

•All Saints Day

USE YOUR VOICE
Early voting began this past Monday in the Rogalski Center and will continue from Monday through Thursday at 12 - 6 pm for two more weeks. For those of us here on campus, voting couldn't be any easier and even if you aren't registered, you can register right at the polls. It is important that we encourage one another to exercise the right to vote. After all the contentiousness that has surrounded the presidential race, some people may feel they don't want to even participate in the general elections. But please don't become cynical. In a democracy, every voice is important.  Pope Francis reiterated that point in a daily homily last year stating, “Politics, according to the Social Doctrine of the Church, is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good… A good Catholic should meddle in politics." The Holy Father's words echo something central to our St. Ambrose mission---that we educate for social justice. Not only good Catholics, all people of every faith and those with none have a role to play in our country. We work together for the common good. Educate yourself on the issues through voter guides available from the US Bishops and others and through discussions, like Thursday's "Poppin’ Topics," and vote. Once again, we are reminded that together we can make a difference. Remember the African proverb, "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a closed room with a mosquito."  Your voice is important. For the good of all, please, use it.  ----Fr. Chuck

•Poppin’ Topics - Monday
Join us for a special Poppin’ Topics on Monday, October 24 at 7:30pm in the Gathering Space.  This week we will discuss the upcoming election and why it is important to vote.  We will also discuss the important issues to take into consideration when you vote.  P.J. Foley, Director of Government and Community Relations at SAU, and Larry Skillin, History Department Chair at SAU, will lead the discussion.  Join for a good discussion and popcorn with special flavors.  Email Paul Burd (burdpaula@sau.edu) for more information.

•Contemplative Prayer Session
Thursday, October 27th at 8:00 pm,  Dick Jensen, a member of Contemplative Prayer of Eastern Iowa, will lead a Centering Prayer workshop in the chapel gathering space. Centering prayer is a method of contemplative prayer with an emphasis on interior silence.  All faiths are welcome to participate.

Not Enough to Worry About
With Fall Break coming-up next Friday, this campus ministry bulletin serves a two week time frame. That also means that we are at the mid-semester point and students might be feeling a little anxiety over upcoming exams. Sometimes we find ourselves worrying much more than we need to. A lesson might be learned from the experience of a fifth grade teacher who was trying to teach her class how to use fractions. She looked at a little boy on the front row and said, "Billy, what is 3/4's of 5/16's? He said, "Miss Smith, I don't know what it is, but it's not enough to worry about."  Too often we do find ourselves stressed about things we have no control over. But the best advice is to take control over the things that we can change, like adopting good study practices, making good choices on what occupies our time, seeking help from the student success center, asking your professor for help, and taking advantage of study sessions. There is plenty that you can control.  Needless worry over the things you cannot control is wasted energy. So do your best and don’t neglect to be reminded of the goodness of God. As American author Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen." A good lesson, and if we learn it, we really don't have a lot to worry about. --Fr. Chuck

HOMECOMING MIRTH
The late Msgr. Sebastian Menke, president of St. Ambrose from 1963 – 1974, used to express a profound observation from taking part in many alumni gatherings that the graduates of St. Ambrose were among the happiest of people he had ever known. On Homecoming Weekend in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, perhaps it’s good to be reminded that lifting up one another with joy can be an important work of mercy. A story is told of a man who died suddenly and went up for divine judgment, feeling extremely uneasy. He didn't think he had done very much good on earth. There was a line ahead of him, so he settled down to look and listen. "I see here that I was hungry and you gave me to eat," Christ said to the first person. "Good man! Go on into heaven!" To the second he said, "I was thirsty and you gave me to drink." And to the third, "I was in prison and you visited me." And so it went on. As each person ahead of him was sent on into heaven, the man examined his conscience and felt he had a great deal to fear. Finally his turn came. Christ said, "Well, there's not much written here, but you did do something. I was sad and discouraged and depressed: you came and told me funny stories, made me laugh, and cheered me up. Get along to heaven!"  The point, of course, no form of charity should be neglected or undervalued. As Pope John Paul I, often referred to as the smiling pope once said, “The strength to see the good side of things should be characteristic of the Christian. If the gospel really means "good news," then being a Christian means being happy, one who spreads joy.”  We welcome home to SAU our alumni and friends. All your works of mercy give honor to your St. Ambrose education. And so does your joy.  --Fr. Chuck

SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES
Last month at the Move-in Day Welcome Mass, Alex Najda, president of our Student Government Association encouraged new students not to miss opportunities for growth on campus. To make her point she used an example from the final episode of the television sitcom, “The Office" when the TV character Andy Bernard looked into the camera and said “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them."  This Wednesday at 6:30 pm an award ceremony will take place in Christ the King Chapel that is one of those "not to miss" opportunities. The Pacem in Terris award, named after an encyclical letter by Pope Saint John XXIII will be given to Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez, a Peruvian born priest and theologian and the principle founder of liberation theology which advocates preferential love for the poor. Over the years this award has been given to Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa--now St. Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and other notable  people who have worked to create a more just and peaceful world. I wonder how many former students who were at St. Ambrose when some of those notable people received the award now say, "I wish I hadn't missed the opportunity to hear him."  Or "she spoke on campus, but my friends weren't going, so I stayed in my room." Don't let that be your experience.  Rather, seize this and so many other opportunities to learn. Meeting a courageous internationally known peacemaker can even help us create our own opportunities for peacemaking right here at St. Ambrose.  It also can lead us to recognize the good old days right now while we are living in them. ---Fr. Chuck

•Pacem in Terris Award - This Wednesday, September 28
Join us for the presentation of this year’s Pacem in Terris “Peace on Earth” Award to Fr. Gutiérrez this Wednesday, September 28 at 6:30pm in Christ the King Chapel.  This event is free and open to the public.  All are welcome.

The Pacem in Terris Award is given to “honor a person for their achievements in peace and justice.”  It was begun by the Catholic Interracial Council of the Diocese of Davenport in 1963 in commemoration of the papal encyclical Pacem in Terris from Pope Saint John XXIII. Past recipients include six Nobel Peace Prize winners and even an officially canonized saint!  Learn more about the award at the Diocese of Davenport website.
