Leap Day: A Day to Catch Up
Tuesday is Leap Day. Since it takes the Earth 365.2422 days to orbit the sun and the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days, every four years we add an extra day to February to catch up. The concept of adding an extra day so that our calendar is synchronized with the solar year leads is an interesting way to solve the problem of time. If only we could come up with a way to solve the problem many of us have with a lack of time. Part of the problem is that we waste time focusing on the wrong things---regret of yesterday or worry about tomorrow. Lent is a good time to refocus on what's most important of all: our relationship with God and with others. A good Lenten practice might be to make a list of the people we need to catch-up with---parents or family members, a classmate or friend we've had a falling-out with, a hurting neighbor who we too easily ignore, a social issue that oppresses others that we do or say nothing about. But Lent is also a time to slow down in order to better recognize the gifts God has placed before us. Oftentimes I can relate to the line from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get." Someone once shared with me that the best Lenten practice she ever undertook was to promise herself that she would not drive her car over the speed limit and she would not be late for any appointments. After a while she realized that when she was not frantically rushing from one thing to another, she could better appreciate the many beautiful things life had to offer her along the way. It might not be so easy for those of us with lead feet, but if we can learn to slow down when we are stressed-out about time, pause and take a deep breath to inhale the goodness of the moment, we might find our spiritual, mental, and physical lives in sync. And we can leap over that awful feeling that we are always playing catch-up with life. Happy Leap Day!    ---Fr. Chuck

•Peer Ministry Positions for 2016-2017 - DEADLINE EXTENDED
We are pleased to be initiating an exciting program for the coming year and we are looking for enthusiastic students to accept one of nine positions as a Peer Minister.  These positions will go to undergraduate students who live in each of the Residence Halls, and work with the Campus Ministry staff to develop and coordinate opportunities for spiritual development and faith sharing in their hall community.  Those selected will work an average of 5 hours per week, earn a $1,500 stipend, and select their housing early.

Visit the Campus Ministry Website (under “Faith”) to find out more about the position and to fill out an application.  Be a part of this exciting new program that has the potential to expand the reach of our ministry programing to more Ambrosians in faith programing and events. The deadline for applications has been extended to Wednesday, March 2!

•This Week’s Brewed Awakening: Ecumenical Dialogue
Join us Monday, Feb. 29 at 8pm in the Gathering Space as Rick Akins, a member the Chicago Archdiocesan efforts for Christian unity (and nephew of Sister Joan) will lead a discussion about the importance of Catholic-Evangelical Unity, and the misconceptions both sides have of each other. Free coffee specialty drinks and hot chocolate will be provided.  Be sure to join us the following Monday (March 7) as Ann Garton from Nursing talks about her experiences over Winter Break serving refugees in France, and leads a discussion about the ongoing refugee crisis.

•Lenten Prayer Series: Taizé Ecumenical Prayer
Learn and practice new forms of prayer all throughout Lent on Monday evenings at 9:15pm in the Chapel.  This Monday, tying in with the Brewed Awakening discussion, we will have an ecumenical (for all Christians) Taizé form of prayer.  This prayer is named for the Taizé community in France - a community committed to making itself “a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and separated peoples” - and focuses on simple, uncomplicated songs to encourage meditation on the mysteries of God.  Learn more about the Taizé community here, and email ministry@sau.edu to help out with this and future prayer services!

Irwin is the past Dean of the College of Theology and Religious Studies, and Walter J. LENT: Let’s Eliminate Negative Thinking
Someone once shared with me an acronym that they used to describe the season of Lent: Let’s Eliminate Negative Thinking. It works. After all, a renewal in faith really can help us approach life in a more positive manner. A good outcome of our Lenten practices can be that we become able to turn life’s challenges into opportunities and to see failure as an occasion to learn a new lesson. You may have heard the story behind the invention of the Post-It note. It’s a great example of a mistake that turned out to be the beginning of what most of us today see an an office necessity.  The 3-M company was trying to come up with a new glue mixture, but instead developed something that barely had the power to hold anything together. Rather than giving up, they decided that perhaps their failed invention might have another purpose.  They applied it to scratch paper, thus the Post-It note was born. A great example of a perceived failure becoming a golden opportunity. To put it another way, “when you change the way you look at things, the way things look change.”  So as we move through Lent, be patient.  Be hopeful.  And pray for the clarity of vision to eliminate negative thinking and to see goodness and purpose even in those places we might not have expected to find it.     --Fr. Chuck

True Love and True Freedom
I’ve learned a few things about Twitter in the last few weeks, though I admit, I’ve had a little help from some “Twitter Coaches.” But this Sunday, on Valentine’s Day, John and Ann Betar of Fairfield, Connecticut, the longest-married couple in the country will go on Twitter to answer questions and share their secret to what is now an 84-year marriage.  click here for the full story. I love John’s comment: “Live within your means. Be content with what you have in life. Oh, and always agree with your wife!” Frankly, it’s sound advice, not only for relationships, but for the Lenten renewal which we began on Wednesday. There is an old saying that says, “We are punished not for our sins, but by our sins.” If we refuse to forgive, we make the gaps between those we love only wider. The sin of greed can be great for our bank accounts, but can isolate us from the joy of family and friends. Pride and self-righteousness can make us feel superior but deprive us of the gifts that those “horrible” people we detest can offer us. Hatred and selfishness really do imprison us. True freedom is found in thinking and acting beyond our own needs and wants and looking out for the needs of others.  It’s a great secret for a happy marriage. But it’s especially a great secret for a happy life. It’s the way to love as we are loved by our Merciful God.  Happy Valentine’s Day. Happy Lent.    ---Fr. Chuck

Leadership and Ego
Football players will figure prominent in the conversations among Ambrosians this weekend. A former St. Ambrose football player, Mitchell Ware from the class of 1955 will give the keynote address at Saturday’s Destination: Leadership conference.  Mr. Ware’s leadership story is incredible. After his time at Ambrose, he served in the Army,  played for the Bears, was a Chicago TV reporter and led state and city-wide police agencies.  He built Illinois' largest minority-led law partnership.  And he served as a justice of the Circuit Court of Cook County.  Quite impressive!  Super Bowl Sunday offers up great stories of players like Denver quarterback Peyton Manning and Carolina quarterback Cam Newton. Much press has been given to the age gap between the two. But there has also been a great deal made about Cam Newton’s exuberant manner of celebrating after touchdowns. Peyton Manning put a stop to the ridiculous debate when he said to a reporter about Newton,  “He's been a great passer.  He's been a great runner.  He's been a great leader….I think his passion, his enthusiasm for the game is great. I think it's good for football." Newton also has praised Manning's stellar career.  By their example, they both teach us that a little humility can go a long way. Good leaders don’t have to tell people they are good leaders. They don’t advertise everything they do on their Facebook page. Their humility and example speaks for itself.  The legendary Alabama  football coach, Bear Bryant is said to have motivated his winning teams with this philosophy:  “If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, then we did it. If anything goes real good, then you did it.”  Effective leaders know how to keep their ego in check and help to shine to spotlight on the gifts of others. That makes us all winners.  Enjoy the Super Bowl. It serves as kind of a Mardi-Gras this year since Lent begins on Wednesday.        ---Fr. Chuck

•Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule for Distribution of Ashes - February 10
Ash Wednesday masses with the distribution of ashes will be offered at 12:00pm, 4:30pm and 9:15pm in Christ the King Chapel. Christian churches of many denominations offer the distribution of ashes in the same manner as Catholics do, symbolizing our desire to use the season of Lent to renew our lives of faith. As such, all Christians are welcome to receive ashes at these masses.

•Understanding the Lenten Fast and Abstinence
FASTING: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Two other smaller meals (not equaling another full meal) are permitted as is drinking of liquids.
ABSTINENCE:  Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.  Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. We are reminded each year that the obligation to do penance on these days is a serious one, but no one should be scrupulous in this regard and if health reasons or the ability to do one’s work is seriously affected, these regulations do not apply.

•LENT @ SAU:  Consider these activities as part of your Lenten observance:
→Daily Mass:  Monday/Friday at 12 noon;  Tuesday/Thursday at 4:30 pm; Wednesday at 9:15 pm.
→Sacrament of Reconciliation: Wednesday 8:30 - 9 pm.  Communal Reconciliation Service: 7pm Tuesday, March 22.
→Stations of the Cross: Booklets for praying the Stations are available under the First Station.  Pray with the Stations in the Chapel any time you like.  Communal Stations: 8pm Wednesday, March 23.  Online Stations with SAU Student Reflections: posted on Ash Wednesday at saustation.blogspot.com
→Small Faith Sharing Groups: During the Year of Mercy Pope Francis has asked the whole church to reflect on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.  Student led small groups will meet weekly for one hour to read, reflect, discuss, pray and respond to the Works of Mercy.  Find a convenient day and time and register in the Gathering Space or online here: www.tinyurl.com/SAULent2016, or email ministry@sau.edu.
→Lenten Prayer Series: Learn and practice different forms of prayer Mondays at 9:15pm, throughout Lent:
- February 15: Eucharistic Adoration
- February 22: Scriptural Rosary
- February 29: Taize Ecumenical Prayer
