Plenty to Smile About
Easter is more than a one-day celebration. Christians celebrate a whole 50-day season of Easter. But even more, Easter is a way of life to be lived every day. In recent weeks across our world and even here in our own community there have been more tragedies than I have space to mention here, but despite the tensions of life, hope always prevails. And living that hope is central to the Easter message. One of the ways we at St. Ambrose University live out that hope is through service in the pursuit of justice and peace. We are proud to be a part of a coalition that honors peacemakers every year and this year we honor the work of the Venerable Thich Nhất Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, and peace activist who received the prestigious Pacem in Terris award from Bishop Amos in California this past Fall. Even though health concerns prevent him from traveling to Davenport, a local ceremony honoring him will take place in Christ the King Chapel this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Nhất Hạnh was a friend of Thomas Merton and Martin Luther King, Jr. and worked with them in the pursuit of non-violent solutions to conflict. In fact, Dr. King nominated Thich Nhất Hạnh for the Nobel Peace Prize. Nhất Hanh also teaches us much about being fully present to each moment. A book of meditations I picked up recently included the following quote from Thich Nhất Hanh: “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile. Sometimes your smile is the source of your joy.” It is especially true for people who live the promise of Easter. If we can become more fully aware of all that is within us and all that is before us at each moment, there really is always plenty to smile about. ---Fr. Chuck

Turning the Corner toward Easter Joy
In his “The Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis writes, “There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without an Easter.” (par. 6). For many people it is easy to concentrate on the trials of life and forget that the Resurrection of Jesus is the central event of our faith. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the problems of the world, the tragedies of life, and the frustrations we face.  But Easter teaches us that the final word is not sin, but grace. What seemed like the resounding defeat of all our hopes is now reversed. Death is defeated by the Resurrection. When we find ourselves overwhelmed by the problems of any day, it is good to be reminded, "this too will pass."  The post-resurrection scene in Luke’s gospel which will be read in many churches on the vigil of Easter, tells of the angel who asked a timely question, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”  If you think about it, that’s an incredible invitation to incomprehensible joy. Teilhard de Chardin is quoted as saying, “Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God.”  We really shouldn’t let anything steal that joy from us.  As we return from Spring Break and enter Holy Week, we prepare to turn the corner on Lent. May our joyfulness display an Easter way of life.  A blessed Holy Week and happy Easter to all.   ---Fr. Chuck

Service and Solidarity: A Source of Joy
Hundreds of Ambrosians will take to the dance floor this Saturday to raise funds for children with cancer and their families. Regardless of how much money is raised at this year’s Dance Marathon, and it is sure to be a lot, the fact that students have given so many long hours of service to this endeavor is incredible. Noteworthy also are the SAU students who next week will spend their Spring Break on Campus Ministry service trips in Mississippi, East St. Louis, or Eastern, KY; or on Habitat for Humanity trips to Colorado or North Carolina; or the Teacher Education Dept. trip to Chicago.  And we should also be very proud of our athletic department, where student athletes  earlier this semester all chipped into a collection that amounted to a $ 1,000 donation for those caught in the European refugee crisis and for the citizens of Flint, Michigan who lack clean water. Such generosity and service really is a source of joy. I've always appreciated the quote of Albert Schweitzer who said, "the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found a way to serve."  It’s no wonder Ambrosians are so often characterized as happy people.
But we also stand in solidarity with those in need, knowing that we share life with all our brothers and sisters in the family of mankind. A story from the Orthodox Jewish tradition goes like this: A group of people were travelling in a boat. One of them took a drill and began to drill a hole beneath himself. His companions said to him: "Why are you doing this?" Replied the man: "What concern is it of yours? Am I not drilling under my own place?"
As the story reminds us, whatever harm is done to one person in the human family is done to all of us. And likewise, whatever good that is done to one, allows the whole ship to rise.  To all Ambrosians in all your varied ways of service, thank you for your open eyes and your open ears to the needs of others. May the sharing of life with our hurting brothers and sisters lead us all to renewed joy.  ---Fr. Chuck

•Christ the King Chapel Spring Break Schedule:
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Spring Break, there are no masses or regular chapel activities Sunday, March 13 through Saturday, March 19.  There is also no 10:30 am mass on Sunday, March 20.  The Regular Mass schedule resumes with 6:30 pm mass and distribution of palms on March 20 - Palm Sunday.

•Don’t forget to SPRING FORWARD on Sunday, March 13.  Set your clocks 1 hour ahead.•

•Brewed Awakening
Join us Monday, March 7 from 8-9pm in the Gathering Space as Ann Garton from Nursing talks about her experiences serving refugees in France over Christmas, and leads a discussion about the ongoing refugee crisis. Free coffee specialty drinks and hot chocolate will be provided. Be sure to join us after break on March 21 as Sr. Joan Lescinski, president of SAU, leads a discussion about the moral messages in the movies nominated for the  Academy Award best picture.

•Lenten Prayer Series: Liturgy of the Hours
Learn and practice new forms of prayer all throughout Lent on Monday evenings at 9:15pm in the Chapel.  This Monday we will pray from the Liturgy of the Hours.  Liturgy of the Hours, or the Divine Office, is the daily prayer of the Church, providing opportunities for prayer and blessing throughout the day.  Our prayer will end our day with readings from Scripture, sung and spoken psalms, and prayers to God in thanksgiving for the day and for the needs of our week.  Email ministry@sau.edu to help out with this and future prayer services!

•Chair of Catholic Studies Lecture - This Tuesday, March 8, at 7:00pm in the Rogalski Ballroom
Monsignor Kevin Irwin, S.T.D., will deliver the Chair of Catholic Studies Lecture.  His lecture is entitled “The Eucharist is Justice,” and coincides with this year’s College of Arts and Sciences academic theme of Justice.  Msgr. Irwin notes that in his encyclical Laudato si, Pope Francis links the celebration of the Eucharist with our understanding of creation, including our responsibility to justice for the earth.  His presentation will link an understanding of the Eucharist as an act of justice with our responsibility for all on our common home.  Msgr. Irwin is the past Dean of the College of Theology and Religious Studies, and Walter J. Schmitz Chair of Liturgical Studies at the Catholic University of America and author of 16 books on Liturgy and the Sacraments.  This lecture is free and open to the public.

•Rooted in Love: The Life and Martyrdom of Sister Dorothy Stang
Sister Nancy Murray, sister of actor Bill Murray, will be presenting a one-woman play about Dorothy Stang, an American nun who was murdered in Brazil because of her efforts to protect the rainforest and its people from disastrous and often illegal exploitation by logging firms and ranchers.  Entitled, “Rooted in Love,” the play will be performed in Christ the King Chapel Thursday, March 10 at 7pm.  Co-sponsored by St. Ambrose University Campus Ministry and GreenLife in support of programs at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat. Fee is $ 10 at the door, but is free to students with their SAU ID.

•Blessings for those going on Service Trips!
Over Spring Break, Ambrosians will be serving in Kentucky, Mississippi, and East St. Louis on the service trips through Campus Ministry and Ambrosians for Peace & Justice.   Headed to Kentucky are:  Reeann McCarty, Karli Atkinson, Kara Fairfield, Nick Riedesel, Chris Sheffield, and Fr. Chuck Adam.  Headed to Mississippi: Trineisha Gray, Maddie Seutter, Annie Mistak, Alex Reed, Audrey Medina, and Kaitlin Depuydt.  Headed to East St. Louis: Paelynne Courson, Maressa Gustman, Autum Yarger, Erin Lesch, Bridget Parr, Lauren Morrissey, Lauren Norcross, Payton Janney, Seth Brauman, Ashlyn Rulis, Tom Prior, and Tammy Norcross-Reitzler.   Groups from Habitat for Humanity and the Education department are headed to North Carolina, Colorado, and Chicago as well.  Blessings to you all on your service experiences!
