HOMECOMING MIRTH
The late Msgr. Sebastian Menke, president of St. Ambrose from 1963 – 1974, used to express a profound observation from taking part in many alumni gatherings that the graduates of St. Ambrose were among the happiest of people he had ever known. On Homecoming Weekend in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, perhaps it’s good to be reminded that lifting up one another with joy can be an important work of mercy. A story is told of a man who died suddenly and went up for divine judgment, feeling extremely uneasy. He didn't think he had done very much good on earth. There was a line ahead of him, so he settled down to look and listen. "I see here that I was hungry and you gave me to eat," Christ said to the first person. "Good man! Go on into heaven!" To the second he said, "I was thirsty and you gave me to drink." And to the third, "I was in prison and you visited me." And so it went on. As each person ahead of him was sent on into heaven, the man examined his conscience and felt he had a great deal to fear. Finally his turn came. Christ said, "Well, there's not much written here, but you did do something. I was sad and discouraged and depressed: you came and told me funny stories, made me laugh, and cheered me up. Get along to heaven!"  The point, of course, no form of charity should be neglected or undervalued. As Pope John Paul I, often referred to as the smiling pope once said, “The strength to see the good side of things should be characteristic of the Christian. If the gospel really means "good news," then being a Christian means being happy, one who spreads joy.”  We welcome home to SAU our alumni and friends. All your works of mercy give honor to your St. Ambrose education. And so does your joy.  --Fr. Chuck

SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES
Last month at the Move-in Day Welcome Mass, Alex Najda, president of our Student Government Association encouraged new students not to miss opportunities for growth on campus. To make her point she used an example from the final episode of the television sitcom, “The Office" when the TV character Andy Bernard looked into the camera and said “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them."  This Wednesday at 6:30 pm an award ceremony will take place in Christ the King Chapel that is one of those "not to miss" opportunities. The Pacem in Terris award, named after an encyclical letter by Pope Saint John XXIII will be given to Fr. Gustavo Gutierrez, a Peruvian born priest and theologian and the principle founder of liberation theology which advocates preferential love for the poor. Over the years this award has been given to Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa--now St. Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and other notable  people who have worked to create a more just and peaceful world. I wonder how many former students who were at St. Ambrose when some of those notable people received the award now say, "I wish I hadn't missed the opportunity to hear him."  Or "she spoke on campus, but my friends weren't going, so I stayed in my room." Don't let that be your experience.  Rather, seize this and so many other opportunities to learn. Meeting a courageous internationally known peacemaker can even help us create our own opportunities for peacemaking right here at St. Ambrose.  It also can lead us to recognize the good old days right now while we are living in them. ---Fr. Chuck

Gutiérrez this Wednesday, September 28 at 6:30pm in Christ the King Chapel.  This event is free and open to the public.  All are welcome.

PULLING TOGETHER
One of the central themes that runs through Catholic thought is the value placed on community.  We emphasize this through such things as the mass, our highest communal prayer, through our social justice tradition, and our belief in the communion of the saints--our union even with those who have gone on into eternal life. It's not difficult to see how the value of a community is also lived out at St. Ambrose, a Catholic university. Currently students are joining clubs, being trained as leaders, as liturgical ministers for Christ the King chapel, and learning the value of teamwork through athletics endeavors and many other activities. Every person at St. Ambrose is a valuable member of this community and every person has important gifts to offer. When those gifts are offered in service to others and we learn to pull together, we are all better off.  Pulling together is also the subject of a story about a gentleman whose car slid off into the ditch along a muddy country road. The man walked to a nearby farm to ask for help and the farmer pointed to haggardly looking old mule and said, “Warwick will get your car out of that ditch.”  After making their way back to the ditch, the farmer hitched the mule to the car. With the snap of the reigns he shouted, “Pull, Fred! Pull, Jack! Pull, Ted! Pull, Warwick!” And the mule pulled the car out with little effort. The man was amazed. He thanked the farmer and asked, “But why did you call out all those other names before you called Warwick?” The farmer grinned and said, “Old Warwick is nearly blind. As long as he believes he’s part of a team, he doesn’t mind pulling.” How much more we truly can accomplish when we learn that we all really are a part of a team. ---Fr. Chuck

FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER 9/11
Sunday will mark 15 years since the horrific terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. Although current first year students at SAU were only 3 years old on that awful day, they have grown up in a world profoundly changed with heightened security, two wars, and much anxiety. As the pope at the time, the now Saint John Paul II, stated, "This was a dark day in the history of humanity. But even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say."  As we remember 9/11, we honor all those who lost their lives, including the heroic emergency personnel and all the lives lost in the wars that have followed. But it’s important to also remember the good will toward our country and the deeds of service that followed in the immediate aftermath. I recall with pride how the SAU community packed the chapel that day to pray for peace and how several interfaith prayer services, open discussions, and dialogues took place that included Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders. Perhaps there was something of a glimpse of what God intended when he created us to live on this planet as one human family. A story told by a Russian born author named Vera Nazarian speaks of the work left to do:

“Once upon a time there were two countries, at war with each other. In order to make peace after many years of conflict, they decided to build a bridge across the ocean. But because they never learned each other’s language properly, they could never agree on the details, so the two halves of the bridge they started to build never met. To this day the bridge extends far into the ocean from both sides, and simply ends halfway, miles in the wrong direction from the meeting point. And the two countries are still at war.”

On the 15th anniversary of a very sad day, let's commit ourselves to learning a common language of understanding and peace. Then we can build bridges that unite people. Then we are living proof of what Holy Father said that day, "evil and death do not have the final say."   ---Fr. Chuck

LABORS OF LOVE
Our nation celebrates Labor Day on Monday, honoring the dignity of workers and the value of good, honest labor. On Sunday during a canonization ceremony at Vatican City, Pope Francis will declare Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata a saint. Thanks to the good work of Kaitlin Depuydt, a photo of Mother Teresa's 1976 visit to Davenport to receive the Pacem in Terris Award is on display alongside all past award recipients in the Gathering Space of Christ the King Chapel. The woman soon to be known as Saint Teresa lived an entire life laboring out of love for others. One incident from her life tells of her work with fellow Missionaries of Charity tending to the poorest of the poor in Kolkata. They happened across a man lying in the gutter, very near death. Scantily dressed and lacking any facility to bathe or clean himself, flies swarmed around his body. Immediately, Mother Teresa embraced him, spoke to him softly and began to pick out the maggots that were nesting in his flesh. A passerby was repulsed by the sight of the man and exclaimed, “I wouldn’t do that for a million dollars.” Mother Teresa's response was immediate, “Neither would I!” Mother Teresa often remarked that the greatest disease in the West today is not tuberculosis, leprosy or A.I.D.S.; it is being unwanted, uncared for, unloved. Her life is a witness to the work of overcoming this disease in everything she did and in every word she said. On Labor Day weekend, in addition to standing up for justice for workers, let the witness of the soon to be "Saint Teresa" inspire us a service so badly needed in our world today. ---Fr. Chuck

Paul Burd, Campus Ministry Grad Assistant is beginning a new discussion forum for students, offering popcorn with various butter flavors, and a current topic for discussion. We will have our first discussion on Thursday, September 8th at 7 pm in the Chapel Gathering Space. The "poppin’ topic" will be the recent controversy surrounding San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest during games, and a larger discussion of race and violence in our country.  Jim Collins, St. Ambrose alum, athlete, and 2016 honorary degree recipient and commencement speaker will lead the discussion. All are welcome to join! We are also looking for volunteers and suggestions for future topics.  Email Paul Burd (burdpaula@sau.edu) or ministry@sau.edu for more information.

•Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities
In the aftermath of violence in our cities, the shooting of police officers, and racial overtones in deaths of unarmed civilians, Bishop Amos has echoed a call by the US Bishops Conference asked the we dedicate Friday September 9 as a Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities. The Thursday evening “Poppin’ Topics” discussion can help us enter into this prayer.  The 12 noon mass on Friday will be offered for peace.
