Do You Have the Time?
As we reach the last week of classes for the semester, it can feel as if we are crowding a lot of activities into just a few days. We can wonder if we will have time for all that still must be done. I like the story about a man who had been driving all night and by morning was still far from his destination. He decided to stop at the next city he came to, and park somewhere where it was quiet so he could get an hour or two of sleep. As luck would have it, the quiet place he chose happened to be on one of the city's major jogging routes. No sooner had he settled back for a snooze when there came a knock on his window. He looked out and saw a jogger running in place. "Yes?" he said. "Excuse me, sir," the jogger, said, "do you have the time?" The man looked at the car clock and answered, “8:15.” The jogger said thanks and left. The man settled back again, and was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window and another jogger. "Excuse me, sir, do you have the time?" asked the jogger. "8:25!" the man replied. The jogger said thanks and left. Now the man could see other joggers passing by and he knew it was only a matter of time before another one disturbed him. To avoid that, he got out a pen and paper and put a sign on his window saying, "I do not know the time!" Once again he settled back to sleep. He was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window. "Sir, sir?" said a jogger, seeking to be helpful.' "it’s 8:45!"
In these busy days, although we might feel we don’t have the time, make sure you keep good balance between work and rest. Take care of yourself and don’t neglect what’s important: your faith, your family, and your friends. For what is essential, make sure you always have the time.   ---Fr. Chuck

Smelling Like the Sheep
In a Holy Thursday homily a few years ago, Pope Francis cautioned bishops and priests not to hide behind their ceremonial rituals and funeral-like faces, but to follow the model of Jesus as shepherd who was willing to live among his sheep and to offer his life in service for them. In his often quoted metaphor, he said that a shepherd should smell like the sheep he serves. This week we received news that a priest of our neighboring Archdiocese of Dubuque will become the new bishop of the Diocese of Davenport. Bishop-elect Thomas Zinkula will also be the Chair of the St. Ambrose University Board of Trustees. Coming from a large Catholic farm family in Iowa, a football player in Mt. Vernon High School and at Cornell College, four year member of his High School choir, and graduate of the same seminary I went to, I have a feeling our new bishop will quickly be one with us. But shepherding is also a responsibility all of us have toward one another. In these days of end-of-the-year celebrations, it might be an especially a good time to ask St. Ambrose students to look out for each other. Make sure we challenge each other to be safe, even as we celebrate. And our care will not only imitate the care God has for each one of us, we'll find ourselves supported by a flock that lives the values that matter most.   ---Fr. Chuck

•Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation
This weekend we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation at the 10:30 am Mass.  Kaitlin Frank and Jon Ketz will be baptized and confirmed.  We will also welcome Amelia Fischer and Emilie Minteer into full communion of the Catholic Church with a profession of faith and the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion.   Lina Cruz, Norma Palomino, Shannan Retter, and Ally Ruffner will also be confirmed on Sunday.   The candidates met together throughout the past year to explore the Sunday Scriptures and experience the Catholic way of life.  We congratulate them and welcome them with great joy!  If you are interested in learning more about becoming Catholic or preparing for the sacraments, please email ministry@sau.edu.

Turning the Corner toward Easter Joy
In “The Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis writes, “There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without an Easter.” (par. 6). For many of us, it is easy to concentrate on the trials of life and forget that the Resurrection of Jesus is the central event of our faith. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the problems of the world, the tragedies of life, and the frustrations we face.  But Easter teaches us that the final word is not sin, but grace. What seemed like the resounding defeat of all our hopes is now reversed. Death is defeated by the Resurrection. When we find ourselves overwhelmed by the problems of any day, it is good to be reminded, "this too will pass."  The post-resurrection scene in Luke’s gospel which will be read in many churches on the vigil of Easter, tells of an angel who asked a timely question, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”  If you think about it, that’s an incredible invitation to incomprehensible joy. Teilhard de Chardin is quoted as saying, “Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God.”  We can’t afford to let anything steal that joy from us.  As we enter Holy Week on Sunday and we prepare to turn the corner on Lent. May our joyfulness display an Easter way of life.  A blessed Holy Week and happy Easter to all.   ---Fr. Chuck

•Good Friday Fasting and Abstinence
A reminder that Good Friday is a day of both Fasting (Catholics age 18-59 should only have one full meal; two additional smaller meals which together do not equal another full meal are permitted, as is drinking of liquids) and Abstinence (Catholics over 14 should not have meat, but eggs, milk, and condiments made of animal fat are fine).  We are reminded each year that the obligation to do this penance is a serious one, but no one should be scrupulous in this regard and if health reasons or the ability to do one’s work is seriously affected, these regulations do not apply.

Please let us know if you can help out for this fun day!

•Monday Night Prayer: Eucharistic Adoration
