Greetings from Rome and Happy Homecoming!
As I write this, I am in Rome for the diaconate ordination of one of our seminarians along with thirty of his classmates from dioceses across the United States.  While starting as chaplain here this July, I also kept my “old job” as vocation director for the Diocese of Davenport, which means the occasional visit to my other alma mater, the Pontifical North American College (where I went after graduating from St. Ambrose).  At the ordination Mass, at the Altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica, I was fortunate enough to be seated very close to Bernini’s famous sculpture depicting the chair of the Apostle Peter surrounded by four of the early Church fathers: St. John Chrysostom, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, and our very own St. Ambrose.  At first it looks like these figures are holding up the chair, but when you look more closely, you discover that they are tethered to the chair by a cord as it floats above them, to show their connection to the “Chief of the Apostles.”  As I got to my place after the long procession and looked up to see St. Ambrose looking  down on me, I thought, “This is perfect!”  The day before, I was able to attend the general audience with Pope Francis along with people of every nation and language.  The colonnade of St. Peter’s square (also designed by Bernini) seems to reach out and embrace the world.  At this audience Pope Francis officially launched the “Share the Journey” campaign of Caritas International (the Vatican’s charitable arm).  This campaign is an effort to promote “encounter” (one of Pope Francis’s favorite words) between local communities and migrants and to remind Catholics everywhere of our global responsibility to be a welcoming church.  The theme that kept coming to mind in all of these experiences was “homecoming.”  It’s all about homecoming.  As a diocesan university, we are connected to  much bigger world and a much bigger church.  We are a second “home” to many, just as Rome is “home” to all who visit here.  As we celebrate our homecoming this week and many of our alumni return to their alma mater, I pray that we will be mindful of our place in the wider church and in the world, and that we will always be a welcoming community.  God bless and welcome home! ---Fr. Thom

•Collecting for Those Affected by Natural Disasters
Campus Ministry is collecting donations to go to Catholic Charities (the local giving arm of the USCCB) and Catholic Relief Services (the international arm of Catholic giving).  Both organizations are on the ground in affected areas in such as Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean, and others.  Donations can be sent to Campus Ministry through campus mail (memo: Relief) or in the collection basket during Sunday masses, and will be split between the two agencies.  You can also donate online at catholiccharitiesusa.org and crs.org.  Please give generously!  A little bit makes a world of difference!

•Wellness and Recreation Center Dedication
On Friday, September 29, at 5:30pm St. Ambrose University will have a Blessing, Dedication, and Ribbon-Cutting ceremony for the new Wellness and Recreation Center.  The Most Rev. Bishop Thomas Zinkula, Bishop of Davenport and Chair of the Board of Trustees, will lead the blessing.  Tours and light refreshments will follow.

•Faith-Learning-Justice Award Winners
Just in time for Homecoming weekend, we have a beautiful plaque hanging in our Gathering Space by the clock which lists all of our Faith Learning Justice award winners, dating back all the way to 2001.  This plaque will continue to be updated as the years go by, and is a standing testament to the service that our students and alumni have given to us in Campus Ministry, and to the university at large.  Be sure to check it out!

•Lectors Needed
There are lots of opportunities for interested students to be Lectors at mass, whether it’s at daily mass, Wednesday night Mass and More, or at both masses on Sundays.  We are seeking new and returning students to volunteer as lectors.  We will give you a brief training, and get a schedule for the rest of the semester.  Contact Tammy Norcross-Reitzler at ministry@sau.edu to learn more and to sign up!

•Small Group Praying with CS Lewis
Peer Campus Minister Katie Galuska (galuskakatherinem@sau.edu) will lead a small faith sharing group on Mondays at 7 pm in the Gathering Space beginning Monday, Oct. 2nd.  The group will reflect on the writings and meditations of CS Lewis and related Scripture passages.   All are welcome.

•Eucharistic Minister Training/Commissioning

•Gideon's Society on Campus Wednesday

We have given them permission to be at several spots on campus this Wednesday morning, October 4. They agree not to proselytize, but only to offer you an invitation to receive a copy of the New Testament. Please be courteous and respectful of their enthusiasm for the Word of God.

God’s Mercy and the World’s “Justice”
This past Wednesday, along with about 150 students, faculty and staff, I took part in the Refugee Simulation put on by Ambrosians for Peace and Justice.  It only took 20 or 30 minutes to go through, and I know that, in the safety and comfort of the Rogalski Ballroom, this was a far cry from the real experiences of so many in our world who are fleeing violence or other intolerable conditions in their home countries.  Still, it was a moving experience.  Pretending to go through the wilderness on foot, getting on a train to anywhere, trying to avoid the various dangers along the way, only to end up before a judge who didn’t speak my language and placed in a detention center to wait indefinitely, gave me at least a glimpse what this ordeal must be like.  There was a pervasive sense of randomness to it all, as if nothing was within my control.  One moment I felt jealousy for the person ahead of me who seemed to skate through, but then the next moment I felt both relief and guilt because someone else had it worse than I did.  There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.  In reflecting on this experience later in juxtaposition to the Gospel for this Sunday, I discovered an odd parallel between the two.  On the one hand, there is that “randomness,” even capriciousness of the world’s “justice” as I experienced it in a tiny way through the simulation.  On the other hand, in the Gospel, there is an almost scandalous universality to God’s mercy, as the laborers who arrived at the end of the day are paid the same as those who “bore the day’s burden and heat.”  Of course, Jesus isn’t telling us how to run a business or an economy in this parable.  If that were the case, we would rightly call him out for promoting wage theft.  Rather, he is describing the kingdom of heaven, in which God looks on all of his children, “early arrivals” and “latecomers” alike, with a wonderfully consistent love.  In the economy of grace, God is free to do as he pleases, but are we jealous because God is generous?  ---Fr. Thom

•Collecting for Those Affected by Natural Disasters
It seems that there is a new crisis in our world almost every day, and it can be easy to tune them out in the midst of our busy lives.  But we, as Ambrosians, are called to remember the needs of our brothers and sisters, no matter how far, and to try and provide for them.

Take Time for God
In talking to students this past week, it was clear that the “honeymoon” period of the start of the school year is abruptly coming to an end.  For most of them, the first round of papers, tests and projects have already come due or soon will.  This is inevitable, of course.  In fact, it is the main reason our students are here: to learn, so that in time they can go forth from here and, as our mission statement says, enrich the lives of others.  I have to admit, I really miss being in the classroom and being able to learn in a more structured environment.  Part of me would love to go back to college.  But, as I heard about all that the students were having to do this past week, I quickly realized that, while I miss learning in the classroom setting, I don’t particularly miss having to be accountable for that learning.  As someone who considers himself a “lifelong learner” I prefer to “audit” and to go at my own pace, even if I am not always as disciplined as I would like to be about it.  It occurs to me that that as the academic year ramps up, this is also the time of year when our relationship with God might easily be put on the “back burner.”  I would strongly caution against this.  In my experience, making time for prayer, for daily conversation with God, has never robbed me of the time or energy I needed to accomplish whatever work was before me.  On the contrary, I have always found that prayer gives me greater perspective, focus, energy and peace in going about my daily responsibilities.  I believe this is more than just the psychological effect of prayer, but truly the working of the Holy Spirit.  And so, as the “machine” of academia really begins to hum, don’t forget to take time for God: in prayer, in retreat opportunities, by going to Sunday Mass (and maybe even the occasional weekday Mass), in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or just in a peaceful stroll under the oaks on a beautiful early fall day.  Let us keep each other in prayer.   ---Fr. Thom

Give Us the Gift of True Prayer and of Peace
There is a beautiful line in the Prayer over the Offerings for Mass this Sunday.  We will hear the priest pray these words: “O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace….”  Yes, it is God who gives us these gifts.  There is never a shortage of things for which to pray, it seems, but especially in these last weeks - between the continuing fallout of the rally in Charlottesville, the tensions over North Korea’s nuclear testing, two hurricanes, and a potentially devastating change in immigration policy for those brought to this country as children.  Of course, this is not even mentioning all of the things that may be going on for us personally or professionally as the academic year really begins to churn up.  It is all the more critical, therefore, to remember the importance of prayer and cultivating peace in our own lives as far as possible.  I certainly believe in the power of prayer.  And even when it seems that our prayer is of little effect in obtaining what we pray for (at least in the way or in the time we would like it), prayer always has a powerful effect on us.  There is so much outside of us that is beyond our control, but how we respond to those things is at least partially within our control.  Prayer is indispensable for this.  It should not be lost on us how frequently in the Gospels we find Jesus sneaking off to a deserted place to pray.  I would suggest that this week we take this short address to God from the liturgy and turn it into a plea: “O God, give us the gift of true prayer and of peace.”  Perhaps we even make it a refrain that we repeat throughout the day.  Of course, even as we pray we continue to look for ways to changes those things we can.  For example, Campus Ministry is still collecting donations for Catholic Charities to support the disaster relief efforts in those areas of the south affected by Hurricane Harvey.  As we look ahead to a new week, mindful of all that is happening in the world and in our own lives, may we be faithful to our prayer and find true peace.    ---Fr. Thom

•Collection for Victims of Hurricane Harvey
As we have been seeing in the news, Hurricane Harvey has left a wake of destruction in Texas and Louisiana.  In an effort to help and as a sign of solidarity, Campus Ministry is collecting donations to go to Catholic Charities to help victims affected by the hurricane.  Catholic Charities will send donations straight to the dioceses affected.  Donations can be sent to Campus Ministry through campus mail (memo: Hurricane Relief), or you can also donate online here: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/CCUSADISASTER.  Even a small donation can help make a big difference in the lives of those affected by this natural disaster.

•Service on Saturday
Our next Service on Saturday project will be on Saturday, September 9th -  we will work with the Gold Coast Neighborhood in Davenport.  This was one of the Urban Plunge projects that got rained out, so we’ll help beautify the neighborhood with some outdoor landscaping work.   We will meet to carpool at 9:30 am and return around 11:30 am.   Please let us know at ministry@sau.edu if you can join us!

•Other Service Opportunities
The ARC of the Quad Cities is a residential home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. There are staff members who help the individuals to develop their abilities, independence, and achieve their full potential.  On Sunday, 9/10 from 1-3pm, there is a picnic for the residents, the staff and their families, and we are asked to help with games for the kids.  We would be running the games and handing out prizes.  You can reply at ministry@sau.edu if you are able to help with the picnic!

We received a note that Project Renewal’s after-school Youth Program is in need of some help this semester.  Project Renewal is an after-school program here in Davenport.  Kids come everyday after school for help with homework and reading, a snack, and privileges to play computer games, board games, and outside at their park.  The after school program is Monday-Friday from 2:30-5:30.  If you’re interested in helping out, even for an hour or two, please let us know at ministry@sau.edu and we’ll get you more information.
