From Glory to Shame to Glory Again
Since becoming the vocation director for the Diocese in 2011, I have gone each year to help out at Immaculate Conception Parish in Colfax, Iowa (about 2 hours west of here) for Triduum and Easter.  As the University is not in session during that time, I will again be heading out west this year.  (Fr. McDaniel will take the Easter Sunday Mass here at 10:30 a.m.)  Colfax does not have a resident priest.  Their regular Sunday Mass is usually supplied by the priest in Newton, but at these busy times of the liturgical year he can’t cover both Newton and Colfax.  I always look forward to this, as I get to walk through Triduum to the joy of Easter with a wonderful, small but tight-knit community of faith.  As we look at the readings and go through the various liturgies of this Holy Week, starting this Sunday with Palm Sunday, we really experience the “roller coaster” of emotions.  We start with Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, joyfully singing with the crowds, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  But soon, in the reading of the Passion, we are calling out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”  In the Passion of our Lord we see the incarnation “writ large” as he suffers every kind of indignity, and finally death itself.  But then, there is word that he has been raised and we are racing with Peter and John at dawn on the third day to the empty tomb!  You see what I mean about the “roller coaster.”  We seem to go from elation to despair back to elation; from glory to shame back to glory again.  But doesn’t this mirror the human story?  We began in glory, fell into shame by our sin, but have now been restored in Christ.  Even though we will not be having any Triduum liturgies here this coming week, I hope that you will all take full advantage of this truly holy week by attending the liturgies at your home parishes or wherever you may be.  Be assured of my prayers in a special way and I look forward to continuing the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection when we all return! ---Fr. Thom

•Good Friday Fasting and Abstinence
A reminder that Good Friday is a day of both Fasting (Catholics age 18-59 should only have one full meal; two additional smaller meals which together do not equal another full meal are permitted, as is drinking of liquids) and Abstinence (Catholics over 14 should not have meat, but eggs, milk, and condiments made of animal fat are fine).  We are reminded each year that the obligation to do this penance is a serious one, but no one should be scrupulous in this regard and if health reasons or the ability to do one’s work is seriously affected, these regulations do not apply.

•CRS Rice Bowl
Bring back your Rice Bowl before Easter Break!  You can bring back your filled Rice Bowls to the Chapel Gathering Space beginning on Palm Sunday.  The proceeds from the Rice Bowl go to fight hunger both in the Quad Cities and around the world.  Thank you for your generosity!

•Online Stations of the Cross
During this Holy Week, pray along with our online stations, featuring SAU student reflections and the beautiful etchings of the late Fr. Edward Catich: http://saustations.blogspot.com.

•Ambrosian Reflections
Be sure to check out the final reflections from our SAU faculty and staff in these remaining days of Lent.  You can find them at http://saulent.blogspot.com/. New reflections through Holy Thursday.

•Communal Penance Service
A communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 27 in the Chapel.  A short prayer service and examination of conscience is followed by an opportunity for individual confession from one of several priests who will be present to help us celebrate God’s pardon, peace, and reconciliation with the Christian community.

•Stations of the Cross Prayer Service
Join us on Wednesday, March 28 for a Stations of the Cross Prayer Service at 8:15pm in the Chapel, led by Ambrosians for Peace and Justice.  Featuring reflections adapted from Catholic Relief Services, we will reflect on the need for justice in many parts of our world today with the stations, and pray for the grace to be God’s agents of change in the world.  Followed by the Rosary at 8:50pm and 9:15pm Mass.

•Sample Food from CRS Countries at Mass & More
Stick around after Mass and More on Wednesday, March 28 to try foods from countries that Catholic Relief Services supports through the Rice Bowls.  Learn about the work that CRS is doing in these areas.  And if you haven’t yet, bring back your filled Rice Bowl and drop it off in the Gathering Space!

•Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation
As the end of Lent approaches, please continue to pray for our elect for Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion: Cameron Smith and Blain Samuelson; and our candidate for full communion in the Catholic Church: Bailey Weber.  They will celebrate the sacraments of initiation Sunday, April 8 at the 6:30 pm Mass.

•Tea Time with Mother Teresa
Join a small group of students to learn about Mother Teresa and reflect on her teachings.  Led by Bizzie Braun, this group will meet every Thursday after Easter, starting April 5, at 8pm in the Chapel Gathering Space.  Tea and hot cocoa will be provided; bring your own mug!  Email ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Busy Student Retreat - April 8-12
Finding yourself too busy and needing some quiet time?  The Busy Student Retreat is meant for you!  This retreat takes place right on campus in the midst of your schedule.  Participants commit to 30 minutes of personal prayer and another 30 minutes meeting with a spiritual guide one-on-one for each day.  Register online at tinyurl.com/BSRSp18 or drop off a registration form at the Campus Ministry offices in the Lower Chapel by Wednesday, April 4.

•College Reading Buddies
Are you interested in working one-on-one with an elementary student?  A teacher at Grant Wood Elementary in Bettendorf is setting up a reading buddy program. College reading buddies would only need to come into class twice in the remaining weeks of the semester: Once to pick out the book with the student and once to read and discuss it. The times can be flexible, preferred from 2:00-3:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you are interested in going with a club, group of friends, or just by yourself, email Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu.

•Pews & Pizza
Calling a few hungry night-owls who are local or staying on campus over Easter break!  Sacred Heart Cathedral is looking for help with finding 2-4 volunteers on Saturday night, 3/31, from about 10:30-11:30pm.  The Easter Vigil Mass involves candles, and they are looking for help to clean the pews after the Vigil before the Easter morning masses the next day.  Pizza will be provided for those helping!  If you can help, email us at ministry@sau.edu, or contact Ruth Johnson from the Cathedral at 563-323-7316.

Sometimes God Saves the Best Gifts for Last
Though it hardly seems possible, we’re already at the week before Holy Week.  It seems like Lent just began, but here we are already more than a month into it.  Technically, we just have a week and a half of Lent remaining, as the Triduum (literally the “three days” of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) is its own mini-liturgical season.  Then, of course, we begin Easter with the Easter Vigil Saturday after dusk.  The temptation is always to coast into Holy Week, slackening in our Lenten resolve.  But as a wise retreat master once told me near the end of an eight-day silent retreat: “Sometimes God saves the best gifts for last.”  This is a time, in other words, to commit ourselves even more ardently to our Lenten acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, not to punish ourselves, but like a runner who rounding the last corner decides to make that final burst toward the finish line.  There may yet be profound graces in store for us in these waning days of Lent.  We know there will be profound graces in our celebration of the Triduum, culminating in the principal Christian feast, Easter.  We know too that after spring break the rest of this academic year will fly by.  For our students, especially those who will graduate, there will also be the temptation to coast, but do not let up early. Finish strong!  Let us keep each other in prayer in these last days of Lent, through our celebration of the Paschal mysteries and in the remaining weeks of the school year.  Let us be watchful for the gifts that God has yet to give us, perhaps even right at the end.  Then, when all is said and done, we can look back without regret, knowing that we have given our all for the one who gave all for us. ---Fr. Thom

•Chapel Schedule for March 18
As we come back from Spring Break, there will only be a 6:30pm mass offered on Sunday, March 18.  The weekday mass schedule resumes with 12 noon mass on Monday, March 19.

•Scrutinies
On this Fifth Sunday of Lent (March 18th) we celebrate the scrutinies with Cameron Smith and Blain Samuelson, our elect who are preparing to be baptized this Easter season.  The scrutinies are official prayers of the Order of Christian Initiation in the Catholic Church.  This ritual prays that the elect will be free from the power of sin and evil, be protected against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ.  While directed at those to be baptized, they remind all of us of need for freedom from sin, which is granted to us through Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. Please keep the elect and our candidates for reception and confirmation in your prayers throughout Lent.

•Chrism Mass
The annual Chrism Mass will take place at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport on Monday, March 19 at 5pm with Bishop Thomas Zinkula presiding.  At this mass the oils of catechumens and of the sick are blessed, sacred Chrism is consecrated, and priests of the Diocese renew their ordination promises. All are welcome to this diocesan celebration. Sacred Heart Cathedral is located at 422 E 10th St, Davenport.

•Chair of Catholic Studies Lecture
Fr. Columba Stewart, OSB, will deliver the annual Chair of Catholic Studies Lecture on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 pm in the Rogalski Center Ballroom.  His lecture is entitled, “What a (Modern) Monk Does: Digital Preservation of Manuscripts from the Earth’s Most Threatened Communities,” and will explore his work as the executive director of the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library (HMML) at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The library has photographed over 140,000 manuscript books dating from the ancient to early modern era, giving priority to collections of persecuted or endangered minorities. Free and open to the public.

•Wilber Peace and Justice Symposium
St. Ambrose professors Keith Soko, PhD, Theology and Keri Manning, PhD, History, are the presenters at the Wilber Symposium on the Christian Tradition and Non-violence at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 22, in the Rogalski Center Ballroom. Soko and Manning will discuss “Dorothy Day and the End of the ‘Forever War.’” The symposium is free and open to the public.

Thirsting for Living Water
For the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent we celebrate the “Scrutinies” with the catechumens (now called “elect”), who are preparing for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist in the Easter Season.  The word “scrutiny” sounds scary, but this is simply a part of their more focused spiritual preparation for these sacraments in what is called the period of “Purification and Enlightenment.”  The Scrutinies themselves are done at Mass, after the Homily, and are composed of a call to silent prayer, intercessions for the elect, a prayer over each of the elect, a laying on of hands, a prayer of blessing and dismissal to delve more deeply into the scriptures.  Simple, but powerful.  We have two catechumens who are preparing to receive the Easter sacraments this year at St. Ambrose on April 8, as well as one candidate (already baptized) who is preparing to be brought into full communion with the Catholic Church.  We will be doing this 1st Scrutiny for the elect during the 6:30 Mass this Sunday.  For each of these three weeks, if the Scrutinies are to be done, the readings are taken from Cycle A in the lectionary.  This week we hear the story of the woman at the well from the Gospel of John.  The account of this beautiful exchange between Jesus and this Samaritan woman is a reflection, I think, of our own deepening relationship with God.  We come to the well (to life), thinking we know what we want, what will make us happy, but find there is something more, something even better for which we are thirsting.  When Jesus speaks of “living water...welling up to eternal life,” the Samaritan woman suddenly isn’t satisfied with temporarily quenching her thirst from the stale water of the well.  What follows is a complete transformation of her life as a result of this encounter with Jesus.  In the same way, we can only satisfy ourselves in life with food, comfort, possessions (the things we think will make us happy) for so long, but eventually we want more.  We thirst for the living water of a life lived with greater meaning and purpose in relationship with God. ---Fr. Thom

•Christ the King Chapel Spring Break Schedule
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Spring Break, there are no masses or regular chapel activities Sunday, March 11 through Saturday, March 17.  There is no 10:30am mass on Sunday, March 18.  The regular mass schedule resumes with 6:30pm mass on Sunday, March 18.  Enjoy a safe and blessed Spring Break!

•Scrutinies
During the third and fifth Sundays of Lent (March 4th & March 18th) we celebrate the scrutinies with Cameron Smith and Blain Samuelson, our elect who are preparing to be baptized this Easter season.

•Volunteers Needed During Spring Break
Volunteers are needed at Project Renewal in March, during SAU’s Spring Break, March 12-16.  Volunteers help the kids with homework, reading and play games at the Afterschool Program.  Approximately 4-5 volunteers each day would be helpful.  Could you help during any of these times?   Monday, March 12 = 2:35 – 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 13 = 2:35 – 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 14 = 1:35 – 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 15 = 2:35 – 5:30 p.m., Friday, March 16 = 12:35 – 3:30 p.m.  If you could help, please contact Ann at Project Renewal at 563-324-0800.

•Fast Fest
The students in Ambrosians for Peace & Justice invited you to take part in a different fast every week of Lent!
