Sent to Serve Peter’s triple profession of love in the Gospel this Sunday is often seen as an undoing of his threefold denial of Jesus, both of which occurred around a “charcoal fire” (a little detail thrown in by the author to help us make the connection). But I like to think of this scene on the beach with Jesus after his resurrection in parallel with another, earlier event in the life of Peter, which also happened to take place after a miraculous catch of fish. Luke’s Gospel recounts for us the episode at the beginning of Jesus’ Galilean ministry when he got into Peter’s boat and asked him to set out into deep waters and lower his nets for a catch. Despite his misgivings, having already spent a whole night fishing with nothing to show for it, Peter did as Jesus asked. As they struggled to haul the nets full of fish ashore, Peter fell at Jesus’ feet and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Now, a mere three years later, Jesus is commissioning Peter to feed and to tend his flock. Could Peter ever have imagined this happening on that day he reluctantly went out on the sea? This makes me thing of our spring graduates. Could they have imagined their graduation on that first day of classes, when they also set out into the unknown and lowered their nets? And now, just a few years later, they are being sent to serve -- in the classroom, the emergency room, the office, the lab, the studio and the theatre. Like Peter, at times they will feel unworthy of the task that is theirs, but they are sent nonetheless. It is their work that is the truest and most lasting legacy of St. Ambrose University. Congratulations to our graduates and blessings to all for a good summer! Fr. Thom. |
