All Members of One Team
Super Bowl Sunday really is an unofficial national holiday in our country. Even those who haven't watched a single football game all season will attend Big Game parties and tune in to the contest of the NFC and AFC champions, the Falcons and the Patriots. For many, the commercials might be the most exciting part. One of the commercials tells the story of a mid 1800's German immigrant, Adolphus Busch, who came to America, following his dream in this land of promise. He met up with Eberhard Anheuser and they formed a great team, producing a beverage I find myself enjoying (responsibly) now and then. Ambrosians might recall the family that included a child named John McMullin who came to America from Ireland about the same time. Thank God for that. He would become the founder of what is now St. Ambrose University. And in our own time, Mohamed Sanu Sr., a Muslim and a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons, lived in his parents’ home country of Sierra Leone before returning to the United States. Now he's a member of a Super Bowl team!  Whether it's the Super Bowl football game on the field, the food we eat, or a beverage we share; whether it’s the jersey we wear or the television we watch the game on; we recognize that talents nurtured and knowledge gained in every part of world will have contributed to our enjoying the Super Bowl. We need each other. Let's make sure after the game is over, we double our efforts to overcome forces among us that want to divide and exclude.  May we return to the core national conviction that no matter where anyone is from, they can be a part of our team. --Fr. Chuck

Standing as One for the Fullness of Life
Exercising one's freedom of speech is an important principle of our democracy. The enormous success of last weekend's Women's March in Washington, DC and other cities was a positive sign of people taking that freedom seriously. This weekend, the annual March for Life will draw thousands to Washington, DC. Those who march in defense of human life also offer a powerful witness to what it means to stand up and support the dignity of the human person. The two marches really have a lot in common from the standpoint of Catholic Social Teaching. It is stated well by Fr. James Martin, SJ, the well known author and editor of American Magazine who pointed out last week that being Pro-Life also means being Pro-Social Justice.  In his blog he writes:

"That means that I am not only for the dignity of the human being from the moment of conception, but also until the natural end of life. For life does not end with birth. A person who is truly pro-life is pro-all life. pro-every stage of life for every person. For all life is sacred, because all life is created by God....So I am for care for the poor, for a living wage, for affordable healthcare, for adequate housing, for a humane work environment, for equal pay for women, for generous child care, for the support of the aged and infirm. That means I support caring for the marginalized among us: the refugee and migrant, the homeless, the person with disabilities, the single mother, women who are abused, minorities of every kind who are persecuted, and all who feel left out, lonely, ignored."

As we conclude our two weeks of activities celebrating civil rights at St. Ambrose University, I hope more and more Ambrosians will have learned our history as a catalyst for civil rights in the Quad Cities and beyond.  But I also pray that we stay alert to the needs of our own day, and despite differing points of view, stand together for what really matters: making our world a more just, more inclusive, more wholesome place where every human person is afforded their dignity and can live in peace. --Fr. Chuck

A New Semester Challenge
One of the blessings of academic life is that every new semester provides an opportunity to begin again. That is especially true as we begin the Spring semester when we are also early in a new calendar year. We start with hope and yet we know that we all have a role in bringing those hopes to life. Pope Francis expressed that sentiment in his New Year’s Day homily when he said,  "Whether the new year will be good or not depends on our choosing to do good each day....saying 'no' to hatred and violence." As a new president and new administration takes office in our country, we pray that our leaders will lead us in "doing good." Clearly there are massive divisions among people in our country. But if if pause to think about it long enough, we realize that there is far more that unites us than what divides us. On a recent Sunday morning program a commentary by news reporter Harry Smith quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was fond of saying,  "We came to this country on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now."  Smith added, "You wonder what it could be like if we all learned to row together." That is a perfect challenge for each of us as Ambrosians who want to make it a good year by doing good.  In this new semester, in this new year, let's strive to row together.  --Fr. Chuck

The Light Darkness Cannot Overcome
There is a TV advertisement circulating the web these days that originated in England. Although it is meant to promote Amazon Prime, it promotes something ever so much more. The ad shows the friendship between a Catholic priest and a Muslim Imam. As the two share a cup of tea, they rise from their chairs to discover they also share a common problem--bad knees--which prompts a gift of knee pads, ordered and sent one to the other through the online company being advertised. The message carries a beautiful sentiment so desperately needed today. For example, after all the ugly political rhetoric leading up to the presidential election in our country and after the Brexit vote in Great Britain, Dictionary.com revealed recently that they word chosen to best summarize 2016 is xenophobia (defined as a fear of, or hatred of, foreigners or of that which is foreign or strange).  Because of the factions that have been exposed in our world, it might be especially important this year as we tell the Christmas story not to leave out the part in Matthew's gospel where visitors to the newborn Christ child include the magi, a mysterious class of gentile foreigners and practitioners of a peculiarly different religion from the one the inhabitants of the land they were visiting practiced. Yes, the magi teach us at Christmastime that everyone is welcome in God's Kingdom. They symbolize our need to learn that God excludes no-one and neither should we. While darkness is real in our world, the advertisement I mentioned and the witness of so many who generously serve the less fortunate, remind us that because of Christmas, it will never get so dark that you can't see the light. So as we prepare to celebrate Christmas, may the Light coming into our world renew us in the work of peace for all---for our Muslim, our Jewish, our fellow Christian brothers and sisters; for those of all religious traditions and for those of none. Together may we learn to find common solutions to our problems through the gift of membership in God's family. It is, after all, the true meaning of Christmas. God is now brother to us in Christ Jesus and are we are now brothers and sisters to each other. Congratulations to our graduates.  A blessed season of peace to all!   ---Fr. Chuck

WAIT FOR IT….
Barely have we consumed the of last of our Thanksgiving dinner leftovers and we enter the Christian season of Advent. Although it’s never easy to celebrate Advent when the world around us has jumped ahead to Christmas and when at a university setting our lives are consumed with final projects, exams, and papers. But try to pay some attention to it. The daily readings of the Advent Liturgy are so powerful reminding us that a new day is promised to us by God. The prophetic imagery is so wonderful. The lion and lamb will lie down together, the sword will become a plowshare, all people will share in a feast, death will be destroyed forever. Advent gives us the faith to believe that the impossible is possible. By being attentive to the longing of our hearts, we can even learn to recognize the ways God is already working to bring that day to a reality. We learn to live with a promise in our hearts that guides toward the future without the need to know exactly what it will look like. The inventor of the television, Philo Farnsworth once said, "Impossible things just take a little longer." Don’t lose hope. Good things will arrive.  In these next four weeks before the celebration of our Savior’s birth, may we never forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. Happy Advent.
---Fr. Chuck

•Join Us for 6:30pm Mass on Sunday
As you come back to campus from Thanksgiving break, join us for mass on Sunday, November 27 at 6:30pm in the Chapel.  There is no 10:30 am mass this Sunday.  The daily mass schedule resumes with 12 noon mass on Monday, November 28.

•Advent Mass Commemorating the Feast of St. Ambrose and the Presentation of the McMullen Awards
Join us next Sunday, December 4 at 10:30am as we honor our patron saint, St. Ambrose at mass for the Second Sunday of Advent.  The Most Rev. Martin Amos, Bishop of Davenport and Chair of the Board of Trustees, will be the presider and homilist for this special liturgy.  Music for the mass will be led by a combined choir of SAU Chamber Singers and Music Ministry.  The mass also features the presentation of the McMullen Awards to this year’s recipients: Bernie Hardiek and Dr. Thomas and Mary Ann Stoffel.  A reception will follow in the Gathering Space.

•Advent Season Events
Advent begins Sunday, November 27.  Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas and a reminder to be constantly vigilant “waiting in joyful hope” for the Lord’s coming.  Here are some ways you can celebrate Advent right here at SAU:
→Pick up a copy of Wondrous Days of Comfort and Joy by Janet Schaeffler, OP.  The booklet invites us to experience the comfort of God through daily Scripture, reflection, prayer and practices.  The booklets are available in the Chapel gathering space, at the Rogalski Center Post Office, and in the Health Science Building.
→Participate in Daily Mass at Christ the King Chapel. Monday and Fridays at 12:00 pm. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30pm, and Wednesday at 9:15pm.
→Enjoy a special Lessons and Carols service Friday, December 2 at 7:00pm in the Chapel.  The evening consists of scriptures for the season and music featuring the University Chorale and Chamber Singers.
→Attend the Advent Communal Reconciliation, Monday, December 5 at 7:00pm in Christ the King Chapel.  A short prayer service is followed by the opportunity for individual confession to one of the priests present.
→Commemorate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation,  by celebrating the vigil mass with us at 9:15pm on Wednesday, December 7, or mass on the holy day at 4:30pm on Thursday, December 8.
→Pray with us at Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday, December 8 at 9pm in the Chapel.  Join for a time of music and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
→Celebrate the Student Candlelight Mass preceding Midnight Breakfast on Tuesday December 13 at 9:00pm.  In the chapel, filled with light from candles held by students, we celebrate the mystery, the joy, and the hope Christ’s birth has brought to our world.  All are welcome.

•Music Rehearsal for Feast Mass
The final music rehearsal for the Feast of St. Ambrose Mass is Monday, November 28 at 6pm in the Chapel.  All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to help lead music.  Email ministry@sau.edu to volunteer!

•Charlie Brown Christmas Celebration
Join the Peer Campus Ministers for a Late Night Charlie Brown Christmas Party at 10 pm in the Beehive, Saturday, December 3rd.  Wear an ugly Christmas sweater or Charlie Brown apparel.  Hot chocolate and sweet treats will be served!

•Saint Ambrose of Milan Lecture
Sr. Maria M. Kiely, OSB, a Benedictine nun from the Congregation of Solesmes, is presenting the annual Saint Ambrose of Milan lecture on December 4 at 4:00pm in Christ the King Chapel.  Her lecture is entitled “The Apotheosis of Valentinian II: Ambrose of Milan’s Funeral Oration,” and will focus on St. Ambrose appropriating the Roman culture of his time in combination with Christian tradition in his funeral oration for the young Christian emperor Valentinian II.  Contact Ethan Gannaway (GannawayEthanB@sau.edu) to learn more.

•Project Renewal Giving Tree
If you took an ornament from the tree in order to buy a book and/or board game for a child, please return the tag with your gift to the Gathering Space by December 7.  The gifts will be delivered to Project Renewal during Finals Week.  Thank you for your generosity!

•Winter Break Service Trip in Mississippi - Applications Due December 7
Want to do some good over your winter break?  Come back a little early for a trip down to Mississippi and help out at the Sacred Heart Southern Missions.  From Monday, January 9th to Saturday, January 14th, we’ll spend time repairing low-income homes and preparing meals at a community kitchen.  Sacred Heart Southern Missions is the only organization in 5 counties to help with home repair, so the projects are plentiful!  You can find applications in the Chapel Gathering Space or the Lower Chapel offices.  Applications are due Wednesday, December 7, so get them in.  Contact Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu to sign up and help make a difference!

•New Hymnals in the Chapel
Beginning this Sunday, we will have new hymnals in the Chapel that we use for all our masses, the Gather Third Edition.  We hope that this new hymnal - containing songs old and new - will help us continue to promote “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy through our collective prayer and song!

We are offering the opportunity to dedicate hymnals for $20 each.  The inside cover will be imprinted with the name of the person(s) being honored.  A great way to commemorate family and friends.  Contact us at ministry@sau.edu to learn more.
