THE FAMILY OF HUMANITY
This weekend family members of our students are welcomed to campus. It is  good to celebrate family. Family is important.  A comedian who takes a more cynical view once said, “Youth is that time in life when you blame all your troubles on your parents. Maturity comes when you learn that everything is the fault of the younger generation.”  In truth, maturity comes when we learn not to cast blame and to take responsibility for our own actions.  Maturity comes when we learn to be grateful for the sacrifices, support, and love that have enabled us to be the persons we are today.  While every family has its own narrative and its unique functions and dysfunctions, ideally “family” is the place where we learn essential messages about life, love, and service to others. In family we learn to love and be loved; to take and to give; to forgive and to be forgiven.  Ironically, we celebrate family at a time when many forces are looking to narrow its meaning by excluding others.  Let's accept the challenge to broaden our belief in one human family. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa stated upon reception of the 1987 Pacem in Terris Award in Lee Lohman Arena, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” Thank God for families. They help us grow to become mature humans together.   ---Fr. Chuck

Disappointed?
When things don't turn out according to our hopes and plans, it really can be terribly painful. Just ask the fans and members of the Atlanta Falcons football team who late into last week's Super Bowl saw their dream of victory so quickly vanish. Many students will have had the experience of not doing well on a test for which they thought that they had studied sufficiently. And perhaps as we approach Valentine's Day there are some feeling a little down about that relationship that just didn't work out. What do you do when everything in your life seems messed up?  Well, first, you don't quit. You get right back up and you try again. I've always appreciated the wise statement about courage: “Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.’” But it is also so important to keep perspective and realize how much we are taking for granted when we are moping about because of a loss or disappointment that in the big picture of things really isn’t all that important. This week a woman who lost her home in the terrible storms that went through the southern part of the United States was interviewed about her loss. Beautifully she expressed gratitude that she and her loved ones all survived and with a deep southern accent she said, "I don't have time to complain. I'm too thankful." That’s a great attitude to develop, especially for those times that every person experiences---when life disappoints.  --Fr. Chuck

All Members of One Team
Super Bowl Sunday really is an unofficial national holiday in our country. Even those who haven't watched a single football game all season will attend Big Game parties and tune in to the contest of the NFC and AFC champions, the Falcons and the Patriots. For many, the commercials might be the most exciting part. One of the commercials tells the story of a mid 1800's German immigrant, Adolphus Busch, who came to America, following his dream in this land of promise. He met up with Eberhard Anheuser and they formed a great team, producing a beverage I find myself enjoying (responsibly) now and then. Ambrosians might recall the family that included a child named John McMullin who came to America from Ireland about the same time. Thank God for that. He would become the founder of what is now St. Ambrose University. And in our own time, Mohamed Sanu Sr., a Muslim and a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons, lived in his parents’ home country of Sierra Leone before returning to the United States. Now he's a member of a Super Bowl team!  Whether it's the Super Bowl football game on the field, the food we eat, or a beverage we share; whether it’s the jersey we wear or the television we watch the game on; we recognize that talents nurtured and knowledge gained in every part of world will have contributed to our enjoying the Super Bowl. We need each other. Let's make sure after the game is over, we double our efforts to overcome forces among us that want to divide and exclude.  May we return to the core national conviction that no matter where anyone is from, they can be a part of our team. --Fr. Chuck

During the walk we stop at different stations and learn about different topics such as, human trafficking, refugees, immigration practices, and restorative justice--all topics that affect our community.  APJ would love to see as many people as possible there, so come and bring a friend! Help get the word out.

Standing as One for the Fullness of Life
Exercising one's freedom of speech is an important principle of our democracy. The enormous success of last weekend's Women's March in Washington, DC and other cities was a positive sign of people taking that freedom seriously. This weekend, the annual March for Life will draw thousands to Washington, DC. Those who march in defense of human life also offer a powerful witness to what it means to stand up and support the dignity of the human person. The two marches really have a lot in common from the standpoint of Catholic Social Teaching. It is stated well by Fr. James Martin, SJ, the well known author and editor of American Magazine who pointed out last week that being Pro-Life also means being Pro-Social Justice.  In his blog he writes:

"That means that I am not only for the dignity of the human being from the moment of conception, but also until the natural end of life. For life does not end with birth. A person who is truly pro-life is pro-all life. pro-every stage of life for every person. For all life is sacred, because all life is created by God....So I am for care for the poor, for a living wage, for affordable healthcare, for adequate housing, for a humane work environment, for equal pay for women, for generous child care, for the support of the aged and infirm. That means I support caring for the marginalized among us: the refugee and migrant, the homeless, the person with disabilities, the single mother, women who are abused, minorities of every kind who are persecuted, and all who feel left out, lonely, ignored."

As we conclude our two weeks of activities celebrating civil rights at St. Ambrose University, I hope more and more Ambrosians will have learned our history as a catalyst for civil rights in the Quad Cities and beyond.  But I also pray that we stay alert to the needs of our own day, and despite differing points of view, stand together for what really matters: making our world a more just, more inclusive, more wholesome place where every human person is afforded their dignity and can live in peace. --Fr. Chuck

A New Semester Challenge
One of the blessings of academic life is that every new semester provides an opportunity to begin again. That is especially true as we begin the Spring semester when we are also early in a new calendar year. We start with hope and yet we know that we all have a role in bringing those hopes to life. Pope Francis expressed that sentiment in his New Year’s Day homily when he said,  "Whether the new year will be good or not depends on our choosing to do good each day....saying 'no' to hatred and violence." As a new president and new administration takes office in our country, we pray that our leaders will lead us in "doing good." Clearly there are massive divisions among people in our country. But if if pause to think about it long enough, we realize that there is far more that unites us than what divides us. On a recent Sunday morning program a commentary by news reporter Harry Smith quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was fond of saying,  "We came to this country on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now."  Smith added, "You wonder what it could be like if we all learned to row together." That is a perfect challenge for each of us as Ambrosians who want to make it a good year by doing good.  In this new semester, in this new year, let's strive to row together.  --Fr. Chuck

•Sign Up for Campus Ministry Activities!
A warm welcome to all new students joining us this semester, and welcome back to all our returning students!  At the beginning of each semester we offer students a chance to sign up for all of the campus ministry activities - from liturgical ministries, to retreat opportunities, to service.  If you already filled it out in the fall, you don’t need to do so again; however, if you’re new or haven’t had a chance to sign up yet this year, you can do so online at http://tinyurl.com/SAUministryinterest16, or email us at ministry@sau.edu to learn more about all the Campus Ministry programming.

•Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Training
There will be a brief training session for new Eucharistic Ministers this Sunday, January 22, after the 6:30pm mass.  If you haven’t been commissioned before, this is a great chance to sign up and help with a very important ministry in our Chapel.  Email Tammy Norcross-Reitzler at ministry@sau.edu with any questions.

•Liturgical Ministers
A schedule for 2nd semester liturgical ministers (lectors, extraordinary ministers of holy communion, server/sacristan, and greeters/ushers) will be created soon.   If you didn’t serve last semester and you are interested this semester, please contact Campus Ministry at ministry@sau.edu.

•Music Ministry
All SAU students are invited to help lead music for Sunday and weekday masses, and other prayer services.  Music Ministry is open to students of all musical skill levels.  This is a great time to start if you haven’t been before.  Rehearsals are Thursdays at 6pm in the Chapel.  Email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to learn more!

•Service on Saturday Opportunities
For the first Service on Saturday of the semester on January 21st, let's stay right here and make fleece tie-blankets for the organization "From Cover to Cover."  They partner with local schools and give kids books and a fleece blanket to take home with them.  We'll meet in the Chapel Gathering space here on campus on Saturday at 1:30 pm.  Next Saturday, January 28th, the service opportunities will be at the Kahl Home, a senior living facility in Davenport. They hold BINGO on Saturday afternoons, and we will be helping to call numbers, pass out prizes, and visit with the seniors there.  The group will leave at 1:30 and return around 4:00.   Let us know at ministry@sau.edu if you're interested in going for this opportunity - space is limited.

•Confirmation Preparation
Anyone interested in preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact Tammy Norcross-Reitzler at ministry@sau.edu.

•Poppin’ Topics
Poppin’ Topics discussions return this Monday, January 23 at 7pm in the Gathering Space.  This week’s “poppin’ topic” coincides with Civil Rights Week, as Dr. Arthur Pitz, adjunct professor and Guest Curator for the Davenport Civil Rights History exhibit at the Putnam Museum, leads a discussion about the civil rights history right here in Davenport.  Come and learn about the historic events that took place right in our local community.  We’re always looking for future discussion topics as well.  Email Paul Burd at ministry@sau.edu with your ideas or to learn more!

•Service for Civil Rights Celebration Week
As part of the Civil Rights Celebration week, we have a special service project set up at the River Bend Food Bank.  The food bank collects food from businesses and individuals and distributes items to food pantries and organizations across 22 counties in IA and IL.   We'll help with sorting canned food items at their warehouse.  We'll meet at 2:45 and return by 5:15 on Tuesday Jan. 24th.  We'll carpool down to the warehouse, so if you would be willing to drive, please let me know that too.   To join us, email us at ministry@sau.edu that you are able to come and you will be sent a link to register yourself in the volunteer system for the Food Bank.
