50 Year Old Wisdom to End the Year
This coming Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of an important event in our community. On April 28, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to Davenport and received the Pacem in Terris Award. In his address that evening, Dr. King eloquently stated that all human beings are interrelated in “a single garment of destiny.” Further making the point that we simply can’t live as isolated individuals only concerned about ourselves, he said, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be; and you can never be what you ought to be, until I am what I ought to be.” A student preparing to graduate said it another way when he told me, “I think I’ve learned as much from being around my classmates and friends and people who were different from me as I did from my studies.” We really do have an incredible influence on one another. That’s a nice thought for us as we prepare to end the year at St. Ambrose. It’s often true that when students look back over their college career, it’s the relationships that were formed, the service done for others, the friendships shaped and the love and support shared that matters most. It's a reminder that the greatest joys come in the service of others. I like the way Rabbi Kushner says it in his book, When All You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough: "Our souls are not hungry for fame, comfort, wealth or power. Those rewards create almost as many problems as they solve. Our souls are hungry for meaning, for the sense that we have figured out how to love, so that our lives matter." As we prepare to conclude another year, I hope we have each helped each other discover that their lives do matter. If so, the 2014-15 academic year will truly have been a most successful year.  Congratulations to our graduates. Blessings to all.   –Fr. Chuck

•Blessing of Bishop Davis Plaque
When he arrived last Fall, Fr. Conn OMaoldhomhnaigh, SAU Presidential Fellow, delivered to Sister Joan a document from the President of Carlow College testifying that Bishop James Davis, third bishop of the Davenport Diocese, was ordained in the Chapel of SSt. Patrick's College Carlow in 1878.  On Wednesday, April 29, at 2 pm, we will be unveiling and a new plaque to be placed with the framed document on the wall in Davis Hall.  Please join us for this brief ceremony in the Davis lounge area. Blessing will be led by Bishop Amos.

•Summer Mass Schedule
This Sunday, April 26 and next Sunday, May 3 will be the last regular mass schedule weekends of the year. The last daily mass is Tuesday, May 5 at 9pm.  Beginning on Sunday, May 10 we will offer Sunday mass in the chapel at 10:30am every weekend that summer classes are in session (except May 24, due to Memorial Day, and July 5, due to Independence Day).  No daily masses are offered during the summer session.  10:30am Sunday masses will be held through July 12 and resume on August 16.  Have a great summer!

•Brewed Awakening
Please join us for  the last Brewed of the year on April 27 from 8-9pm.  Sr. Joan Lescinski, SAU president and resident movie expert, will discuss moral messages in the Oscar winners and best movies of the past year. •Thank You from Campus Ministry
We would like to express our thanks and great appreciation for all of the gifts and talents our students, faculty, and staff have shared through campus ministry this year. THANK YOU!

•School Supply Collection
As you clean out your rooms and backpacks, don’t throw out your school supplies!  We’ll collect them on campus for kids in the community next fall.  Pencils, paper, notebooks, binders, markers, etc are all being collected in 4 locations: the Beehive, lower Cosgrove, and the mailroom and ATM in the Rogalski Center.  Thanks for helping Third Missionary Baptist Church with this ministry for kids in the neighborhood.

EARTH DAY: For Future Generation of Kids
One of the most inspirational things I’ve seen students accomplish here at St. Ambrose is Dance Marathon. Over the past three years it has grown tremendously and this year raised over $175,000 with over 700 students participating. That’s incredible! The motto of Dance Marathon is FTK, or “For the Kids.” That could also be a great motto for the environmental movement which hopefully is also a growing on our campus and all over the world. What better thing can we do than work toward a future that will assure a safe environment with clean air and water and access to the basic necessities of life? Later this year Pope Francis will issue an encyclical letter on environment. As he prepares for that encyclical, a one-day summit with scientists, environmental researchers and leaders of major religions will be held at the Vatican on April 28.  A statement on the Vatican website calls the summit a time to study, “the intrinsic connection between respect for the environment and respect for people — especially the poor, the excluded, victims of human trafficking and modern slavery, children, and future generations.”  At a daily mass in February Pope Francis may have given us a sneak peek into what he will be telling us in his encyclical. He said, “A Christian who does not protect creation, who does not let it grow, is a Christian who does not care about the work of God; that work that was born from the love of God for us,” Francis continued. “And this is the first response to the first creation: protect creation, make it grow.” This Wednesday, April 22, is the 45th Earth Day. Please take note of it. Learn to reuse, recycle, renew, because as Henry David Thoreau said, “what’s the use of a fine house if you don’t have a tolerable planet to put it on?” Let’s work to protect our earth, our home, making it tolerable, for the kids and for every future generation of kids. Join the movement. Celebrate Earth Day, everyday! ---Fr. Chuck

Baseball and the Easter Way of Life
Easter is not merely a one-day holiday, but a whole 50-day season of celebrating life. But in reality, Easter is also a way of life for those who believe death has been overcome and that the tensions of sin and hatred will never have the last word. Since baseball metaphors seem to fit so perfectly with Easter, perhaps it’s no coincidence then that opening day each year falls around the same time as Easter Sunday. Resisting the urge to mention a specific team, Easter gives the kind of perpetual optimism of any fan who the previous September cried, “just wait until next year.”  Easter is about being forgiven and learning to forgive. It’s about starting over again and again, each time with new courage having learned from what went wrong the previous times.  And it’s about perseverance.  Easter reminds us not to quit, when the we going is tough. Hank Aaron’s motto whenever he was in a slump or feeling badly, or having trouble on or off the field says it well, “keep swinging.”  And it’s recognizing the joy of just being in the game of life. The recently departed Chicago Cubs legend, Ernie Banks, will forever be known for that sentiment expressed in his own words, “It's a beautiful day for a ballgame... Let's play two!” That’s the Easter way of life. It’s about hope, it’s about perseverance, and it’s about recognizing joy in ordinary things. Try to live it for each of the 50 days of this Easter season. Who knows? We might just learn to live it for life.   ---Fr. Chuck
