EARTH DAY: For Future Generation of Kids
One of the most inspirational things I’ve seen students accomplish here at St. Ambrose is Dance Marathon. Over the past three years it has grown tremendously and this year raised over $175,000 with over 700 students participating. That’s incredible! The motto of Dance Marathon is FTK, or “For the Kids.” That could also be a great motto for the environmental movement which hopefully is also a growing on our campus and all over the world. What better thing can we do than work toward a future that will assure a safe environment with clean air and water and access to the basic necessities of life? Later this year Pope Francis will issue an encyclical letter on environment. As he prepares for that encyclical, a one-day summit with scientists, environmental researchers and leaders of major religions will be held at the Vatican on April 28. A statement on the Vatican website calls the summit a time to study, “the intrinsic connection between respect for the environment and respect for people — especially the poor, the excluded, victims of human trafficking and modern slavery, children, and future generations.” At a daily mass in February Pope Francis may have given us a sneak peek into what he will be telling us in his encyclical. He said, “A Christian who does not protect creation, who does not let it grow, is a Christian who does not care about the work of God; that work that was born from the love of God for us,” Francis continued. “And this is the first response to the first creation: protect creation, make it grow.” This Wednesday, April 22, is the 45th Earth Day. Please take note of it. Learn to reuse, recycle, renew, because as Henry David Thoreau said, “what’s the use of a fine house if you don’t have a tolerable planet to put it on?” Let’s work to protect our earth, our home, making it tolerable, for the kids and for every future generation of kids. •Service on Saturday opportunity - Run for Renewal 5K
Our final Service on Saturday opportunity will be this weekend with Project Renewal’s “Run for Renewal” 5K. We are asked to support the runners by marking the route and directing traffic on this early morning - volunteers needed from 7:30-10am. Support the great work that Project Renewal does! •Movie Screening
Join the Sexual Assault Awareness Team on Monday April 20th at 7pm in the ballroom for the film The Hunting Ground, a ground breaking documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. Join us to learn more about the fight for justice for survivors of assault! A panel discussion will take place after the screening.
•Brewed Awakening
All are invited to the April 20 discussion about environmentalism pertaining to the Mississippi River. The event will be led by Kathy Wine of River Action, a Quad Cities organization that focuses on maintaining the Mississippi River. Free coffee and speciality drinks will be provided at this Brewed Awakening in the Chapel Gathering Space on Monday, April 20 from 8-9pm.

Be sure to mark your calendars for April 27, our last Brewed Awakening of the year. Sr. Joan Lescinski, our university’s president and resident movie expert will discuss moral messages in the Oscar winners and best movies of the past year. This should be an insightful discussion to close out the year. So join us on Monday, April 27 at 8pm in the Gathering Space!

•Music for Commencement Mass
There is still time to sign up for the mass! All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to assist with music for the Commencement Mass on Sat, May 9 at 9am in the Chapel. Help send off our graduates with a beautiful liturgy! Rehearsals will start on Monday, April 20 at 7pm in the Chapel. Please email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu if you would like to help out!
•“Dash 4 Drex” Memorial Run
Next Saturday, April 25, is the Seventh Annual Dash 4 Drex, a 2.1 mile run/walk established to honor the memory of student Derrek Drexler who died in March 2009 after a courageous battle from a rare complication from a viral infection. The Dash begins at 9am in front of Bechtel Hall. Cost: $25/public, $20/SAU students, $15/t-shirt only. All proceeds benefit the Derrek D. Drexler Scholarship Fund at St. Ambrose University. •Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies - June 11-14, July 9-12
Ever thought about working or volunteering in youth ministry? The Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies program is for you! This summer program equips participants with the experience, tools, and resources to assist them in all avenues of youth ministry.
