First in the Nation
As a native born Iowan, I am very proud that our state begins the process of choosing the next president of the United States. Not everyone shares my enthusiasm for the Iowa Caucus.  Some point out that Iowa is not very diverse, we are not largely populated, and only a small percentage of Iowans participate in the caucus. But in a state the size of Iowa, we do have the opportunity to meet candidates, to hear them speak, to ask them questions, and to even take selfies with them.  Ambrosians know this well having had the opportunity this year to see many candidates right here on campus. The Iowa Caucus takes place this coming Monday and I hope Ambrosians know that they and any resident of Iowa who will be 18 years old by election day in November can register at their caucus site and take part in it.  Why participate?  Because taking part in our political process truly is an honorable endeavor.  If we can move beyond the cynicism that turns the word “politics” into something negative, we can begin to recognize democracy for what it truly is: a place where we challenge our leaders to solve problems without warfare or power grabs.  It’s about making sure that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” are safeguarded for all.  It’s about voting for those who will work for just policies that uphold the dignity of all members of society, especially the most vulnerable, and policies that protect the fragile planet we inhabit. In short, the democratic process is about the future: our own and those who will come after us. There really is no better way to bring about change than through the electoral process. We can call it, "the second foot of social justice." The United States Bishops call it, “Faithful Citizenship.” And Pope Francis calls it authentic faith. In his September address to the joint session of the US Congress he echoed what he wrote in the Joy of the Gospel: “An authentic faith . . . always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.” Doesn’t that sound like an Ambrosian value? One that enriches lives? As the first in the nation, let's pray that we exercise it well.     ---Fr. Chuck

Chuck Adam at adamcharlesa@sau.edu.

•Lenten Small Groups
