A Flood of Prayers
It is hard to comprehend the sheer amount of rain that has fallen (and is continuing to fall in some places) in Texas and Louisiana as now tropical depression Harvey continues to wreak havoc in the south of our country.  At the time of writing this, 37 people have died, 30,000-40,000 people are in shelters and many thousands more have been displaced.  According to one source, estimated damages could be as high as $190 billion (compared to around $50 billion for Hurricane Katrina in 2005).  And, of course, these figures are about much more than money.  This is about people and their livelihoods, their homes, businesses, places of worship, and schools.  In the face of this kind of devastation, the question is often posed to those of us in ministry, “Why?  Why would God allow this?”  The implication, of course, is that God is “up there” twisting his moustache saying, “Let’s see how they like this!”  This is not my God.  This is not the God of revelation.  This is not the God of Jesus Christ.  Rather, this likely reflects more of our own human (and sadly vindictive) tendencies.  So, what is my profound theological answer to the question “Why?”  Here it is: I don’t know.  Nature does according to it’s, well...nature.  It is and always has been somewhat unpredictable.  We can and should have frank conversation about the effects of climate change on severe weather events and on development in disaster-prone areas, but the fact is that right now none of that matters.  Right now is a time for prayer, solidarity and compassion.  Information about how you can help those affected by this storm through Catholic Charities has been included in this bulletin.  Also, Campus Ministry will be collecting donations to support the disaster relief efforts.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of east Texas, Louisiana and anywhere else in the path of this storm as it moves northeast.   In a special way, we hold in prayer our alumni and fellow Ambrosians who live in these areas.  May God protect them and may the needs of those impacted be met through the loving hands of God’s people.  ---Fr. Thom

•Labor Day Weekend Mass Schedule
Due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am only this Sunday. There is no 6:30 pm mass Sunday and no 12:00 pm mass Monday as offices are closed.  Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend!

•Collection for Victims of Hurricane Harvey
As we have been seeing in the news, Hurricane Harvey has left a wake of destruction in Texas and Louisiana.  In an effort to help and as a sign of solidarity, Campus Ministry is collecting donations to go to Catholic Charities to help victims affected by the hurricane.  Catholic Charities will send donations straight to the dioceses affected.  Donations can be sent to Campus Ministry through campus mail (memo: Hurricane Relief), or you can also donate online here: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/CCUSADISASTER.  Even a small donation can help make a big difference in the lives of those affected by this natural disaster.

Off to a great start!
For a short week of classes, what a full week it has been!  Between move-in, Welcome Mass, Urban Plunge, Convocation, the start of classes and our first Wednesday night Mass & More (not to mention all of the “kickoffs” for the various departments, clubs and organizations on campus), I think it’s safe to say we’re off and running.   Being the “new guy” in campus ministry, I wasn’t sure what was typical for attendance at Wednesday night Mass & More.  As it turned out, we had over 100 students show up for Mass in the grotto and stay for ice cream sundaes in the chapel gathering space.  My colleagues in campus ministry tell me this is well above normal.  I think a lot of credit is due to our Peer Campus Ministers for getting the word out.  I’m not one who generally wears my emotions on my sleeve, but it brought a tear to the eye and put a little more bounce in my step as I walked back to my house that night.  Of course, we know that maintaining this level of participation will be a challenge as expectations for classes ramp up and extracurriculars shift into high gear.  Still, I pray that our students will find creative ways to make sure that their relationship with God stays at the center of their lives and that they will take full advantage of all that campus ministry has to offer.  As Christians, we cannot afford to live compartmentalized lives, in which just a fraction of our day or week is given to God. Rather, as Fr. Bud (my spiritual director when I was student here) first helped me to see, all of life is the spiritual life and everything else we do somehow fits into that.  This week in the Gospel Jesus challenges us with the question, “Who do you say that I am?”  In a sense, our answer to that question determines everything else.  May we respond boldly with Peter, “You are the Christ,” and then live accordingly.         ---Fr. Thom

Stranger in a Strange Land...Sort Of
It has indeed felt very strange to be back on campus.  I graduated from St. Ambrose in 2000 and have returned to campus for various things in the intervening years, but there is definitely something different about being really back on campus, especially in my new capacity as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry.  In ways, I do feel like a “stranger.”  While there are many familiar faces among the faculty and staff, there are many new faces as well.  And in ways it does feel like a “strange land,” as the landscape of the campus has changed so much and so many new buildings have been built since my time here as a student.  As strange as all of this feels, there is still something warmly familiar.  It feels like home and it is great to be back.  I am excited, humbled and blessed to begin this new ministry.  Of course, as strange as it may feel for me to be back on campus, it must really feel strange for our new students.  For them everything is new and strange.  And yet, hopefully, in a very short while they will discover that same warm familiarity and home-like feel that our campus community fosters so well.  Welcome back to our returning students, faculty and staff, and a special welcome to a new class of Ambrosians!  Let us hold each other in prayer in these strange and wonderful days of transition. ---Fr. Thom
