Stranger in a Strange Land...Sort Of
It has indeed felt very strange to be back on campus. I graduated from St. Ambrose in 2000 and have returned to campus for various things in the intervening years, but there is definitely something different about being really back on campus, especially in my new capacity as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry. In ways, I do feel like a “stranger.” While there are many familiar faces among the faculty and staff, there are many new faces as well. And in ways it does feel like a “strange land,” as the landscape of the campus has changed so much and so many new buildings have been built since my time here as a student. As strange as all of this feels, there is still something warmly familiar. It feels like home and it is great to be back. I am excited, humbled and blessed to begin this new ministry. Of course, as strange as it may feel for me to be back on campus, it must really feel strange for our new students. For them everything is new and strange. And yet, hopefully, in a very short while they will discover that same warm familiarity and home-like feel that our campus community fosters so well. Welcome back to our returning students, faculty and staff, and a special welcome to a new class of Ambrosians! Let us hold each other in prayer in these strange and wonderful days of transition. ---Fr. Thom
•Welcome From the Campus Ministry Staff
Our campus ministry staff is here for all members of the St. Ambrose community regardless of their religious or denominational affiliation. We want you to know that Christ the King Chapel is your spiritual home while at St. Ambrose. Our staff includes our new Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Thom Hennen (333.6151), our Director of Music Ministry and Liturgy Chris Clow (333.6189), our Director of Service and Justice Ministry Kaitlin Depuydt (333.6083), and our Director of Faith Formation Tammy Norcross-Reitzler (333.6132). We look forward to meeting all who are new to St. Ambrose. Always feel free to stop in and visit us in our offices in the lower level of Christ the King Chapel.
•Come as You Are to 3:00 pm Sunday Mass
For those who will have spent the day moving into residence halls, we want you to know that casual dress is appropriate for the 3:00 pm mass today – Sunday, August 20. This mass is specifically intended to help new students and your families have an opportunity to worship today. Simply come as you are!
•Chapel Schedule
All Ambrosians, regardless of faith tradition or religious affiliation, are invited to make Christ the King Chapel their spiritual home while at SAU. We offer a special 3:00 pm mass today to welcome new students and their families, but our usual Sunday masses while classes are in session are at 10:30 am and 6:30 pm. Daily masses are offered Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 pm and on Wednesday evenings at 9:15 pm (in the Grotto if weather allows). The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered 45 minutes before each daily mass, and by appointment with Fr. Thom or other priests on campus. For any changes, please keep an eye on this bulletin, sent out via email each week, and also available in the Chapel Gathering Space.

•Convocation and Blessing of the Academic Year
Please join us at 11 am this Tuesday August 22 in the Rogalski Center Ballroom as we welcome the class of 2021. Most Rev. Thomas Zinkula, Bishop of the Diocese of Davenport and Chair of the SAU Board of Trustees, will lead the campus community in a prayer service asking God’s blessing on the new academic year. Dr. Larry Skillin will offer the keynote. Sister Joan Lescinski, President of St. Ambrose University, will offer the customary charge to the community for the coming year. All are welcome!
•Wednesday Night Mass & More
Mass and More is a great SAU tradition. Join us this Wednesday, August 23 at 9:15 pm in the Grotto which is located at the northwest side of Ambrose Hall (rain location is in the Chapel). After Mass, we’ll have a make-your-own sundae bar in the Chapel Gathering Space. It’s a great time for mid-week prayer and to meet new people.

We have many opportunities for students to grow in faith, share their gifts and talents, and build up the Kingdom of God. There will also be an opportunity to sign up during and after the 10:30 am and 6:30 pm Sunday masses on August 27, as well as at ClubFest on Tuesday, August 29. •Peer Campus Ministers
Every Residence Hall on campus has a designated Peer Campus Minister. These students are are excited about growing in faith and want to tell you about the many opportunities campus ministry has for faith learning justice! Peer Campus Ministers will be introducing themselves to the residents in their halls - be sure to say hi, and let them know your ideas too. Your 2017-2018 Peer Campus Ministers are: Katie Galuska (North Hall); Morgan Wollesen (Davis Hall); Kristina Koos (Bechtel Hall); Jenny Dickes (Franklin Hall); Clay Colborn (Rohlman Hall); Alyssa Goldermann (McCarthy Hall); Terrence Shubert and Claire McCarthy (Cosgrove Hall); Elizabeth Braun and Abby Hammer (Hagen and Tiedemann Halls, Townhouses).

Calling all new students (freshman and transfer)! The Bee Connected Retreat is just for you! The retreat is Friday, Sept. 22-Saturday, Sept. 23 at Camp Loud Thunder. It’s a great opportunity to make friends, receive tips from upperclassmen, be introduced to all that Campus Ministry has to offer, and strengthen your faith. •Music Ministry
Love to sing or play an instrument? Music Ministry is looking for you! Music Ministry is made up of SAU students of all years, majors, and musical ability, and leads music for Sunday masses, Mass and More, and other prayer services and events. Join us for a special Thursday rehearsal on August 24 at 6 pm in the Chapel, or come join us Sunday before mass. Email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to learn more.
•Service on Saturday
On every Saturday of the academic year, Campus Ministry offers an opportunity for service in the community. We will begin on Saturday, August 26, helping with a Mobile Food Pantry with the River Bend Food Bank. Tables are set up with food items, which are distributed to people who need it. We will meet at 9:40 am to carpool, and return by 12:45 pm. For more info and to sign-up, email us at ministry@sau.edu.
•Ambrosians for Peace and Justice
Join us for the first meeting of Ambrosians for Peace & Justice (APJ). We are a group of students who are interested in peace and justice, doing service projects together and discussing the larger picture of social justice in our community and world. All Ambrosians are welcome! We will meet on Wednesdays at 8 pm, beginning August 30 in the Lower Chapel. See you there!
