Changes big and small
With everything that was going on last weekend between the fantastic conference on St. Ambrose of Milan, the reception of the relics of Saints Ambrose, Protasius and Gervasius at our 10:30 Mass and the celebration of our baptisms and confirmations at the 6:30 Mass (not to mention the fact that I had almost no voice last weekend), I didn’t really have the opportunity to announce to the campus community a small change in my assignment beginning this July.  As you may know, during my time here at St. Ambrose I have also been serving as the Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Davenport, as I have for the last 7 years.  This will change July 1.  I will continue in my assignment here as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry, but Fr. Joseph Sia will become the new vocation director for the Diocese.  I will still be assigned as one of two associate directors of vocations (along with my counterpart, Fr. Jeff Belger, at the Newman Center at the University of Iowa), but I anticipate that most of those duties will be fulfilled within the scope of my present ministry as university chaplain.  Basically, we’re going back to the same arrangement that Fr. Chuck enjoyed before I came.  From the university side of things, you will probably notice little difference, but for me personally it will be a big change.  I so look forward to only having one office, one (primary) job and only having to report to one place each day - right here at St. Ambrose.  I will be able to pour more of my time and energies into this ministry that I have already come to love so dearly in the 9 months that I have been here.  When I came here last July, I had hoped that we would be able to move in this direction.  I am grateful the opportunity came sooner than later.  If you haven’t noticed, there are other changes in the air.  As I write this, it is a beautiful spring day in the 70’s.  Then again, they’re already talking about dropping temperatures and a wintry mix for the weekend.  Change happens fast, especially when it comes to the weather in Iowa.  But this welcome blast of spring reminds us that there isn’t that much left to this school year and even bigger changes are on the way for our seniors.  We’re not there yet, but we’re rounding the corner.   Enjoy the weather (whatever it is) and keep your eye on the prize! ---Fr. Thom

•CRS Rice Bowl
There’s still time to bring back your Rice Bowl - just drop it off in the basket in the Gathering Space.  Your generosity goes to help improve the lives of those in need in the Quad Cities and around the world!

•Service on Saturday
This Saturday, April 14, we will be cleaning up the neighborhood around Project Renewal in preparation for the Fit Fest next weekend.  We will meet a little before 9am at Rogalski, and be back shortly after 11am.  Start your Saturday with a small service project to help the folks at Project Renewal!  If you are interested, email us at ministry@sau.edu.

•Tea Time with Mother Teresa - Thursday, April 19
Join a small group of students to learn about Mother Teresa and reflect on her teachings.  Led by Bizzie Braun, this group will meet every Thursday after Easter at 8pm in the Chapel Gathering Space.  Tea and hot cocoa will be provided; bring your own mug!  Email ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Project Renewal Fit Fest
Join us next Saturday, April 21 from 8-11am for a fitness festival with and for kids & families from Project Renewal, the after-school program just a mile south of campus.  The Fit-Fest is a challenge run with 10 stations of obstacles put on by many of SAU's teams and club sports, with soccer drills, disc golf throws, and crossfit challenges, ending in an inflatable slide!  We are looking for volunteers for timing the participants and to run the inflatable station.  Email Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu if you can help out!

•L’Arche Community Visit Rescheduled!
While they were planning on joining us back in February, snow forced us to reschedule.  So on Sunday, April 22, we will be having visitors join us from the L’Arche community in Clinton.  L’Arche is a global community of adults with and without developmental disabilities, and we have one such community in Clinton, IA.  Ambrosians for Peace & Justice have invited the community to join us for 10:30 am Mass and brunch on Sunday April 22.  If you would like to join APJ in providing hospitality for our guests, please let Kaitlin know at ministry@sau.edu.

•Music for Commencement Mass
All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to assist with the music for the Commencement Mass on Saturday, May 12 at 9am in the Chapel.  Most Reverend Thomas Zinkula, Bishop of Davenport, will be the celebrant for the liturgy.  This mass provides a beautiful send-off for our graduates and their families, and is a wonderful SAU tradition.  Rehearsals begin Thursday, May 3, in the Chapel.  People of all skill levels welcome!  Email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Peer Campus Ministers for 2018-2019
Congratulations to these students who have been selected to serve as Peer Campus Ministers in the next academic year: Jacob Braun (Cosgrove); Kelli Kluever (Bechtel); Rachel Wiedwan (North); Keeley Knobloch (Davis); Alberto Vargas (Rohlman); Andrea Adam (Franklin); Katie Galuska (Hagen); Jenny Dickes (Tiedemann); Kristina Koos and Sarah Thilenius (McCarthy); Clay Colborn and TJ Shubert (Townhouses).  As Peer Campus Ministers, these students will assist the Campus Ministry staff in providing and promoting faith learning justice.

•Donation Boxes for Friendly House and Open Door
You should see donation boxes placed around campus for the next couple of weeks, including in the Chapel.  A group of graduate students in the Masters of Social Work program are collecting non-perishable food goods and clothing for the Friendly House food pantry and Open Door Crisis Assistance in Davenport.  Both organizations help out families in need in our local QC community.  If you would like to donate food or clothing, drop it off in the boxes in the Chapel Gathering Space, or others like it across campus.  Please bring donations in by Thursday, April 26.  Thank you for your generosity!

•The Dating Project Film

Come view this one-night theatrical release on Tuesday, April 17!  The way people find love has radically changed in an age of swiping left or right.  The Dating Project is a non-fiction film that follows five single people as they search for meaningful relationships and try to learn how to form real connections with people in our world today.  Check out a sneak peek trailer here: https://vimeo.com/259059759, and order tickets online at www.TheDatingProjectMovie.com.
