Happy Homecoming!
I have always found it strange that at Homecoming many of our alumni actually leave home to come here and celebrate with us.  Also, many of our students - particularly our newest students - may still struggle to identify St. Ambrose as “home.”  And yet, when we think of the feelings we get from home, wherever that may be for us, I think we get many of those same feelings when we return to this place.  I certainly felt that way last year when I came back as Chaplain.  As much as had changed in my time away and in all of the bewilderment of that transition, there was still a powerful feeling of home.  I have maintained ties with a number of my friends and faculty from my time here as a student and I know that they feel the same.  A vivid reminder of this came for me last spring when I brought a group of students down to northern Mississippi for one of our spring break service trips.  On our free day we were able to zip up to Memphis to see some of the sites and were graciously invited to dinner at the home of one of our many alumni couples who met here as students.  There was an instant bond.  After all, we share a home: St. Ambrose.  As we celebrate Homecoming this weekend, I hope and pray that Ambrosians past and present will preserve that common bond that derives from the many meaningful experiences we have had, the memories we share and the friends we have made here at our common home.  Fr. Thom.
