Celebrating with the Saints and Praying for All Souls
This Thursday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints.  A reminder that for Catholics this is a holy day of obligation.  In addition to our regular 4:30 Mass that day, we will have an anticipated Mass for the holy day on Wednesday, October 31st at our usual 9:15 p.m. Mass & More.  This Mass will be in Spanish (worship aids will be provided and the homily will be in English) as we also look toward November 2nd, All Souls Day or “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead).  In Mexican culture this day is observed by setting up “altarcitos” (little altars) with pictures, mementos, flowers and other decorations to remember friends and family members who have passed.  We will do something of the same in the gathering space of the chapel on Oct. 31st, and throughout the month of November we will have cards available for you to write down the names of your deceased loved ones so that we can remember them in our prayers.  Both of these feasts (All Saints and All Souls) remind us that the Church in heaven and the Church on earth are one.  There is only one Body of Christ.  We both look to those holy women and men who were models to us of Christian discipleship, asking for their prayers along our own pilgrim way, and we remember and pray for all souls, that they may know God’s peace forever in heaven  Fr. Thom

Confidently Approaching Jesus
It can be intimidating to approach someone whom you feel doesn’t understand you or your experience, or someone you see as being so high above you.  This can be especially true for many people when they think about approaching Jesus.  Even some lifelong Christians struggle with this.  I mean, he’s “way up there,” and “we’re way down here,” right?  Wrong. There are some beautiful lines from the second reading for Mass this Sunday from the Letter to the Hebrews that remind us just how approachable Jesus is.  We read, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.”  The radical reality of the Incarnation means that our God became one of us - that he knows “from the inside” what it is to be human, to be body and soul, to experience the whole range of human emotions, and to be tempted.  Because of this, the author of the Letter to Hebrews goes on to say, “So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.”  May we draw near to Jesus, who knows and loves us even better than we know or love ourselves, and who is ever close to us.  Fr. Thom
