The Lord is Kind and Merciful As many may know by now, my mother, Jo'an Hennen, passed away this past Tuesday. She was 88 years old and lived a full, beautiful life. And while my family and I are sad now because we miss her so dearly, everything happpened as it should. We knew that this would be coming soon: after a cancer diagnosis in January, she entered Hospice (with whom she herself had volunteered for many years) and she passed very peacefully with her husband of nearly 65 years and her children at her side. I was blessed to give her Holy Communion and to offer the prayers for the commendation of the dying just moments before she passed. It was truly a beautiful death and I know that we could not have asked for anything more. The words of the psalmist in the response for this Sunday and the words of Jesus in the Gospel are ringing in my ears as I think of the events of the past few days: "The Lord is kind and merciful" and "Give, and gifts will be given to you: a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap." Thank you to all who have expressed their heartfelt sympathy to me and my family in these days. May we all live and die so beautifully. Fr. Thom |
