This Sunday’s gospel is the story of Jesus healing Bartimaeus, a blind man from Jericho. In this gospel Jesus is leaving Jericho and a large crowd is sending him off. Bartimaeus cries out to Jesus to have pity on him. After being dismissed by the crowd, he cries out again,” Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” Jesus then stops and says, “Call him.” So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
For many of us, there are distractions in our lives that blind us from our faith or blind us from what we are really searching for. We may be searching for guidance on what decisions to make, who to build relationships with, or what path is right for us. As a Graduate Student, I am nearing the end of my program. Questions are coming up about what I want to do when I graduate, where I want to be, and it can be overwhelming at times. Throughout my undergraduate experience and throughout my life I have had to make decisions. When we go to college we start to figure out what we want and who we are on our own. We start to become our own individual person apart from our families and those who raised us. There can be decisions that are overwhelming and challenging but these decisions are what make us stronger and help us to learn.
Whatever you may be searching for remember, Jesus is calling you. He is calling you to come to him to ask him to free you from your blindness and wants to show you the way. I pray that you all take courage and go to Him. Answer his call and ask him to guide you along the way.
