Love is in the air! The hearts and sweet messages of love I see seem to affect me in a deeper way this February. I think it’s because my younger sister, Traci, had an emergency open heart surgery after suffering from a heart attack last July while we were camping together. Our family is so grateful that she listened to her body and went to the hospital in time, and that she was seen by wonderful doctors who literally saved her life. Throughout her hospitalization, the doctor kept telling her that she had a “good heart.” Traci continues to remind us with a smile that she has a “good heart.” And, she most certainly does both physically and spiritually.

Several members of our family attended the Go Red for Women Dinner, a fundraiser and awareness event for the American Heart Association. My sister Traci shared her story emphasizing the importance of listening to our bodies, and her cardiologist shared important information on ways to prevent heart attacks and strokes. One of the lessons I learned from that evening was that its important to take the necessary actions to have a “good heart.” I think the same is true about having a good and loving heart!

During my sister’s recovery she worked really hard at healing her body from the trauma of the heart attack and surgery. If I want to have a “good heart” and strengthen my capacity to love more, I, too, must commit to daily habits of love. I’m committing to spending time with God in prayer, saying “I love you” to my husband and family members, seeing people on the peripheries, listening attentively to people’s stories and ideas, and sharing my time and resources with those in need.

During this month of St. Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, let’s take steps to be more loving to God, ourselves and one another. After all, when asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)
