It’s the time of the semester where the pace is picking up! Classes are in full swing. Clubs, sports and other activities are bursting into action. We all have responsibilities, goals, dreams, opportunities and challenges to overcome. It's an exciting time, and it can feel overwhelming.
So, how can we keep our peace in the midst of this growing pressure to do so much?
No one accomplished more and made more of a positive impact with her life than St. Teresa of Calcutta, who said:
“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grow in silence. Is not our mission to give God to those we walk with? Not a dead God, but a living, loving God. The more we receive in silent prayer, the more we can give in active life. We need silence to be able to touch souls. The essential thing is not what we say but what God says to us and through us. Jesus is always waiting for us in the silence. In this silence he listens to us and speaks to our souls. And there, we will hear his voice. ... In this silence we find a new energy and a real unity. God’s energy becomes ours, allowing us to perform things well. There is a unity of our thoughts with his thoughts, of our prayers with his prayers, of our actions with his actions, of our life with his life.”
When was the last time you gave yourself an opportunity to focus on silent contemplation of God? When’s the last time you took a deep breath and sat quietly to unite with his abundance of peace, courage, energy, wisdom and strength through prayer? When's the last time you experienced the reassurance of his loving presence whispering deeply into your soul?
If Mother Teresa found time for silence in her busy life of courageous service - by the grace of God, we can too.
I pray you are able to accomplish all that you strive for this semester, while remaining united with the peace of Christ through it all.
