Campus Ministry Reflections

The Gospel for this upcoming Sunday is a challenging one. In this parable of the wedding feast, those originally invited to the king’s wedding feast refuse the invitation, and so he sends word to the “highways and byways” to invite any and all in order to fill his hall with guests. Jesus seems to be flinging open wide the doors of the Kingdom. But then, in the second part of the parable, one of the invitees is turned away for not wearing a wedding garment. Huh? What is happening here? First you invite this person, then kick him out for not following the dress code? I suppose this might feel a bit like when we invite our non-Catholic friends to Mass, but then (as politely as we can) explain that they should not receive Holy Communion. This is not because we don’t want to include them, but because we want them to know what this means, that it is not an empty symbol for us but a profound statement and commitment, a “sacrament,” literally an “oath.” Ironically, what may seem exclusionary is, in fact, meant to respect one’s religious liberty as well as to invite them to something truly meaningful. Perhaps the focus of the second part of the parable is less about the invitation and more about how we accept the invitation? The door is open!  But what does it mean for us or call from us to walk through that door? -- Fr. Thom
