Campus Ministry Reflections
As I write this, the country is still waiting for the final result of the 2020 Presidential Election. Words like “unprecedented” have probably been overused this year, but this election will go down in the record books for sure. When I went to bed on election night, I knew that we would likely not have a result by morning, but whichever way it went I was at least hoping that we might have some clearer sense of the direction of things. That didn’t happen. I just wanted the uncertainty and waiting to be over, to know what was going to happen so that I could begin to prepare myself mentally and spiritually for this new reality. Much of life is uncertainty and waiting, and much of faith is learning to be comfortable, even at peace, in that uncertainty and waiting. In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus tells the parable of the wise and the foolish virgins awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom. It would have been nice for them to know the precise time of his arrival, but they did not. The wise virgins brought plenty of oil, the foolish brought none. And what is this “oil?” The classic interpretation is that the oil represents personal faith. Yes, this election is “unprecedented.” Yes, there seems to be more than usual riding on the outcome. Yes, it is much closer than anyone predicted. But whatever happens, our lamps are trimmed, and we have oil in reserve. As people of faith in the midst of this uncertainty and waiting, we are at peace. -- Fr. Thom
