WAIT FOR IT….
Barely have we consumed the of last of our Thanksgiving dinner leftovers and we enter the Christian season of Advent. Although it’s never easy to celebrate Advent when the world around us has jumped ahead to Christmas and when at a university setting our lives are consumed with final projects, exams, and papers. But try to pay some attention to it. The daily readings of the Advent Liturgy are so powerful reminding us that a new day is promised to us by God. The prophetic imagery is so wonderful. The lion and lamb will lie down together, the sword will become a plowshare, all people will share in a feast, death will be destroyed forever. Advent gives us the faith to believe that the impossible is possible. By being attentive to the longing of our hearts, we can even learn to recognize the ways God is already working to bring that day to a reality. We learn to live with a promise in our hearts that guides toward the future without the need to know exactly what it will look like. The inventor of the television, Philo Farnsworth once said, "Impossible things just take a little longer." Don’t lose hope. Good things will arrive.  In these next four weeks before the celebration of our Savior’s birth, may we never forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. Happy Advent.
---Fr. Chuck

•Join Us for 6:30pm Mass on Sunday
As you come back to campus from Thanksgiving break, join us for mass on Sunday, November 27 at 6:30pm in the Chapel.  There is no 10:30 am mass this Sunday.  The daily mass schedule resumes with 12 noon mass on Monday, November 28.

•Advent Mass Commemorating the Feast of St. Ambrose and the Presentation of the McMullen Awards
Join us next Sunday, December 4 at 10:30am as we honor our patron saint, St. Ambrose at mass for the Second Sunday of Advent.  The Most Rev. •Advent Season Events
Advent begins Sunday, November 27.  Advent is a season of preparation for Christmas and a reminder to be constantly vigilant “waiting in joyful hope” for the Lord’s coming.  Here are some ways you can celebrate Advent right here at SAU:
→Pick up a copy of Wondrous Days of Comfort and Joy by Janet Schaeffler, OP.  The booklet invites us to experience the comfort of God through daily Scripture, reflection, prayer and practices.  The booklets are available in the Chapel gathering space, at the Rogalski Center Post Office, and in the Health Science Building.

→Pray with us at Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday, December 8 at 9pm in the Chapel.  Join for a time of music and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
→Celebrate the Student Candlelight Mass preceding Midnight Breakfast on Tuesday December 13 at 9:00pm.  In the chapel, filled with light from candles held by students, we celebrate the mystery, the joy, and the hope Christ’s birth has brought to our world.  All are welcome.

•Music Rehearsal for Feast Mass

•Saint Ambrose of Milan Lecture
Sr. Maria M. Kiely, OSB, a Benedictine nun from the Congregation of Solesmes, is presenting the annual Saint Ambrose of Milan lecture on December 4 at 4:00pm in Christ the King Chapel.  Her lecture is entitled “The Apotheosis of Valentinian II: Ambrose of Milan’s Funeral Oration,” and will focus on St. Ambrose appropriating the Roman culture of his time in combination with Christian tradition in his funeral oration for the young Christian emperor Valentinian II.  Contact Ethan Gannaway (GannawayEthanB@sau.edu) to learn more.

We are offering the opportunity to dedicate hymnals for $20 each.  The inside cover will be imprinted with the name of the person(s) being honored.  A great way to commemorate family and friends.  Contact us at ministry@sau.edu to learn more.

Recalling God’s Bounty
This two-week bulletin takes us to Thanksgiving, a celebration that may especially have important significance for our nation now that we have concluded a particularly harsh election season. Despite how your feel about the outcome, it is especially important to recall that our deepest security comes not from fragile and imperfect human leaders. Our deepest joys and hopes are in God who created us and called us to be responsible stewards of the world and to love as he loved us. And knowing how imperfectly we have done that, we are compelled to return to God with gratitude for sustaining us and for hope for the future.  I am reminded of the roots of a hymn that is sung in many churches this time of year. Composed by a Lutheran pastor named Martin Rinkart during a time when a deadly plague overcame his village and caused him to have to conduct up 50 burial services a day. Those deaths included even members of his own family.  Amazingly, during so much pain, he found the grace to compose the words to the hymn, "Now Thank We All Our God."  The second verse may especially have meaning for many in our own day:
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed;
And free us from all ills, in this world and the next.
Despite whatever we find ourselves dealing with, may we recall the bounteous nature of God's love and care for us and may gratitude and hope fill our hearts. A blessed Thanksgiving to all.  ---Fr. Chuck

•Thanksgiving Break Schedule
Due to Thanksgiving break, there will be no Sunday or daily masses celebrated from Sunday, November 20 through Saturday, November 26.  There is also no 10:30am mass on Sunday, November 27.  Regular mass schedule will resume with 6:30pm mass on Sunday, November 27.  Thanksgiving blessings to all.

•Month of All Souls
In the Catholic Tradition the month of November is a time to pray for our deceased loved ones.  All month we keep a candle at the front of the altar with the names of the deceased loved ones of SAU students, faculty, and staff.    If you would like to add the names of your deceased loved ones, you can still fill out a card in the Gathering Space and place it before the altar.  We will remember them all in our prayers at every Mass.

•Project Renewal Giving Tree
Students from Music Ministry invite you to take an ornament from the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space this weekend before going home for break.   Each ornament has the name, age and interests of a child at Project Renewal.  We ask you to buy a new book, puzzle, and/or board game for that child and return it to the Gathering Space by December 7th.  The gifts will be delivered to the kids at Project Renewal during Finals Week.  Thank you for your generosity!

•Service with From Cover to Cover
Ambrosians for Peace & Justice will be volunteering with the organization From Cover to Cover on Tuesday, November 15th from 2:30-5:00 at Madison Elementary.  From Cover to Cover is a children’s literacy organization, and the event on Tuesday is a Family Literacy Night to encourage reading at home.  Let us know at ministry@sau.edu if you would like to join us.

•Music for the Feast of St. Ambrose Mass
The next rehearsal for the Feast mass is Monday, November 14 at 6pm in the Chapel.  All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate.  Contact Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu if you would like to help out.

•New Hymnals in the Chapel
As you come back from Thanksgiving break, you will notice something different in the Chapel - new Gather Third Edition hymnals.  We hope that this new hymnal - containing songs both old and new, along with new settings of the mass that correspond with the most recent edition of the Roman Missal - will help us continue to promote “full, conscious, and active participation” in the liturgy through our collective prayer and song!

We are offering the opportunity to dedicate hymnals for $20 each.  The inside cover will be imprinted with the name of the person(s) being honored.  A great way to commemorate family and friends.  Contact us at ministry@sau.edu to learn more.

•Winter Break Service Trip in Mississippi!

Not So Insignificant
It has been a history making week. Who could have predicted, that after 108 years, the Chicago Cubs this year would have won the Word Series? With a general election on Tuesday, one way or another, the upcoming week will be even more historic. But many little things that may seem insignificant to us at the time also hold the promise of having lasting significance toward a better world. For example, things like casting a vote in Tuesday's election may seem like a rather tiny thing for an individual, but it can have lasting implications for the whole world. Raking leaves for an elderly neighbor for Sunday's Bee the Difference Day, or donating a piece of clothing you no longer wear that can be sold to raise money for the homeless for Hunger Week seems insignificant, but offers a treasured gift for the person who is helped. We shouldn't belittle even the very little things like a warm and friendly smile, a compliment, a gesture of welcome, or holding a door for someone. The American author, Carl Sandburg told of two men exchanging gossip in a general store in Hardin County, Kentucky, one day in February, 1809. "Anything happen over the last week?" one asks. "No," answers the other, "nothing's happened. Oh, except there's a new baby down to Tom Lincoln's house. A boy, I think." That baby boy grew to be America's greatest president. Little things can make a big difference.  An unknown poet wrote:
  Great events we often find,
On little things depend,
And very small beginnings
Have oft a mighty end.
We can each make a significant difference. Please, don't neglect doing a good things because it seems small. It could even produce an incredible result. ---Fr. Chuck

•Be Sure to Vote!
Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day.  All St. Ambrose University students who wish to vote in Scott County can do so on campus - the Rogalski Center is a polling place for Scott County.  Polls will be open from 7am until 9pm on November 8.  You can register to vote and vote on the same day in Iowa as well - if you are not yet registered, simply bring a proof of identity (driver’s license, passport, student ID) and proof of residence (such as your Res Life housing contract) to the poll.  You can find more information, including details about voting absentee, at the Dean of Students website.  As Pope Francis has said, “We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that their leaders can govern.”

•Welcome Busy Student Retreat Guides
We are pleased to welcome Sr. Marilyn Breen, PBVM; Sr. Kathy Carr, BVM; Sr. Pat Doody, OSF; Sr. Stefanie MacDonald, OSB; and Sr. Belinda Monahan, OSB to campus as spiritual guides for this semester’s Busy Student Retreat.  Over 30 students will be meeting with the spiritual guides this week to reflect on scripture and the movement of God in their lives.   Please keep the directors and students in your prayers this week.

•Service on Saturday, November 5th
On Saturday November 5th, we will help at Humility of Mary Housing and their transitional housing program in Davenport.  A single-parent family is moving out of a shelter and into their own apartment soon, and we’ll help with cleaning projects at the apartment before they move in. We’ll meet at 9:45 and return around noon. Join us in this service project by emailing ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Ambrosians for Peace & Justice are Collecting Clothes
In preparation for the Clothes Out Hunger sale as part of Hunger Week, students in Ambrosians for Peace & Justice invite you to donate your used clothing for our Clothes Out Hunger sale.  We’ll collect clothes in the Lower Chapel conference room until the sale, which is Tuesday November 8th.  Funds raised will be donated to Kings Harvest this year, and any unsold clothing will help families at Humility of Mary Housing.  Thanks for your help!

•Hunger Week - November 6-11
There’s lots going on for Hunger Week this year - help fight hunger in the Quad Cities!
- Sunday, Nov 6 - When you arrive at Rogo for Bee the Difference day on Sunday, bring your clothing donations for our Clothes Out Hunger sale with you - we will collect clothes at a table outside the ballroom.
- Tuesday, Nov 8 - Clothes Out Hunger Sale from 10am-4pm on the first floor of Cosgrove.
- Wednesday, Nov 9 - Join in an interactive hunger prayer service at 8:30pm in the Chapel Gathering Space, with different stations and activities to reflect on and pray for local and worldwide hunger.
- Thursday, Nov 10 - Poppin’ Topics at 7 pm in the Chapel Gathering Space will feature the APJ students discussing food waste and hunger issues.
- Friday, Nov 11 - We’ll donate food items and leftover clothing from earlier in the week to Humility of Mary Housing and the Central Community Circle Food Pantry.

•Poppin’ Topics
Join us for our next Poppin' Topics on Thursday, November 10th at 7:00pm in the Gathering Space.  Keeping with Hunger Week, we will discuss the problems of poverty and hunger, focusing on food waste and how we can prevent it.  Carly Franzgrote, Hunger Week director and member of Ambrosians for Peace & Justice, will lead the discussion.  Come for a great conversation and popcorn with special flavors.  To learn more email Paul Burd at burdpaula@sau.edu.

•Music for the Feast of St. Ambrose Mass - Rehearsals Begin November 7
Rehearsals for the Feast mass begin this Monday, November 7, at 6pm in the Chapel.  All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to join with Music Ministry and help lead music for the Feast of St. Ambrose Mass on Sunday, December 4 at 10:30am.  People of all skill levels are welcome.  Please contact Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Winter Break Service Trip in Mississippi!
Spend the last week of your winter break in service down south with Sacred Heart Southern Missions in northern Mississippi.  From Monday, January 9th to Saturday, January 14th, we’ll spend time repairing low-income homes and preparing meals at a community kitchen.  Sacred Heart Southern Missions is the only organization in 5 counties to help with home repair, so the projects are plentiful!  Find more information and applications (due December 7th) in the Chapel Gathering Space and Lower Chapel, or contact Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu to find out more.
