This weekend as we celebrate Homecoming and the Inauguration of our 14th President our hearts are filled with gratitude and joy!  We are grateful for the blessings of relationships, cherished memories, strong and faithful leaders, dedicated faculty and staff, generous donors and patrons, and transformative experiences in and out of the classroom, on and off the field.  We are grateful for our beautiful campus, a place to call “home” while attending school and a place that welcomes back alumni and friends.  

What a joy it is to celebrate together the beginning of a new era at St. Ambrose under the leadership of Dr. Amy Novak.  Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious.  She has invited us all to Come to the Table and celebrate joyfully with her and her family.

May our festivities this weekend, remind us of God’s great love for us and for all of creation.  May we be energized to continue to work together, to learn and grow and transform the world.

It’s Fall Y’all! This beautiful season is among us, and I am here for it! It’s a time of pumpkins, sweater weather, crisp mornings, and best of all change.

For many of us, change is scary and challenging. We all have been going through changes in our lives that are pushing us out of our comfort zones. The good news is that outside of our comfort zones, we will find more room to grow. 

Some of us may be adjusting to new environments, new people, conflicts and confrontation. Whatever you personally are going through, I hope you know that God will guide you through it, and you will be stronger on the other side.

When I look back at my time in undergrad at St. Ambrose, the most challenging times were the moments that made me grow and helped me become who I am today. Thankfully, I had a community of people who challenged and supported me to learn.

I pray that you all find those communities and the support you need. Remember to be patient with yourselves and others. Wherever you find yourself today, embrace the changes happening in your lives. Trust that God will be with you and is saying “Don’t worry about it, sweetheart.”

As some of you know, I started grad school last week! It has been a bit overwhelming to remember how to study and do homework, but overall, I’m really enjoying my classes and my professors are amazing. In two of my classes this week, we reflected on “The Man in the Arena,” a well known speech given by Theodore Roosevelt:

 

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt

 

Maybe you feel as though this semester is an arena you’re terrified to jump into. Maybe you’re already in the arena and wish there was a backdoor to sneak out. Perhaps your thoughts of self-doubt are clouding your vision and making you wonder if you should even be in the arena in the first place. Whether you jump into the arena or not, you have a chance of failing. Fail boldly. Remember that the Holy Spirit is with you in the arena, and will walk with you in your failures, successes, frustrations, fears, and joys. -- Lauren
