BE KIND. ALWAYS.
Super Bowl Sunday captures so much attention in our society that I guess it’s only natural that there would be a certain amount of verbal jousting between fans of each team. I’m not overly sensitive, but I found a comment made in the Huffington Post about coaches of both teams a bit annoying. It was pointed out that both Seahawks Coach Peter Carroll and Broncos coach John Fox were once defensive coaches for the Iowa State Cyclones football team. But it was journalist Kelli Gail’s follow up comment, meant to be amusing, that burned against my Iowa born and raised loyalties. She went on, “it goes to prove that it doesn’t matter where you start, it’s where you end up!” Of course I don’t mean to imply that coaching on a professional level and in a setting with millions watching is not a step or two up from Ames, Iowa. But why the put-down of Iowa State? This week my sister, a teacher who actually works in Ames, Iowa, posted a note on social media that said this: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” Yes, it is true that the battle on the field at MetLife Stadium is far from the only one that should concern us. The victories that count most are won by those who can see infinite value in themselves, in their work, and in all others, regardless where they are from, and no matter how lowly their job or position in life. Please support SOUPer Bowl Sunday which supports a local food pantry. And do enjoy the game!   ---Fr. Chuck

LEFT OUT IN THE COLD
We’ve probably all complained about the subzero temperatures we are experiencing this winter.  On the positive side, some particularly good humor from late night comedians has started with the line: “It’s so cold that…..” My better judgment tells me not to repeat them here.  Humor about the cold is quickly abated when one stops to think of those whose professions require them to work outside in order to give us the services we take for granted, or the tragedy of the homeless living on the streets of our cities. As chilling as that reality is consider the statistic that came out this week from the international relief organization OXFAM. It reports that the 85 most wealthy people in the world possess as much wealth as all the lowest 50 percent of our world’s population combined.  Put another way, these 85 individuals possess more than the combined wealth of 3.5 billion people! The OXFAM report blames laws enacted in many countries over the last 40 years that have worked to favor the wealthy, including lower tax rates for people with higher incomes, financial deregulation, anticompetitive business practices, and major cuts in public services for those who need them the most.  And the worst part of the report, the gap continues to widen at a rapid rate, especially in the USA. While a group of Ambrosians marched in the cold during this civil rights week, it is apparent that billions of our brothers and sisters continue to be left out in the cold when it comes to economic justice.  It is a complex reality and I am out of writing space here.  But to seek a solution, let's tune-in to the preaching of Pope Francis and to a better understanding of Catholic social teaching. We can’t allow wealth to blind us to an essential truth of our faith: we are our brother’s and sister’s keeper.  No one should be left in the cold.                                  ---Fr. Chuck

THEOPHERA---A GREAT GIFT
While students were away on Christmas break, a magnificent painting by the late St. Ambrose art professor, Father Edward Catich, was installed in Christ the King Chapel. Displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in 1950 and removed when it was deemed too controversial for its time, the icon can now be found in the devotional alcove on the east wall of the chapel. Entitled, Theophera, a Greek  word meaning “God Bearer,” Fr. Catich portrays the Christ child as black infant, held by a white Madonna, portrayed perhaps even as a mixed-race Caucasian. Just as it challenged people in 1950 to think differently about their preconceived ideas, so this icon today can teach an important message: we are all children of one gracious God. What a great gift this piece of art is to all who worship in Christ the King Chapel. What a great example Father Catich gives to us about to putting the Catholic Intellectual Tradition to work in each of our various disciplines. But even more, what a powerful message for us all to be continually reminded that each and every one of us, regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender, sexual identity or orientation, is linked by God in a common humanity. A perfect message for Civil Rights Week. A timeless message for all Ambrosians. A great gift, indeed! ---Fr. Chuck
