TAKING TIME
Where does time go?  It seems hard to believe that we are nearing the midpoint in the semester.  If it is true that time flies when you’re having fun, we must really be having fun. Or is it just that some of us are getting older.  Regardless, the following advice came from a book of quotes and anecdotes edited by Anthony Castle.  Its source is anonymous, but its wisdom is good, especially this weekend as a large group of students participate in an Antioch Retreat and all of us prepare for Spring Break:
Take time to THINK—it is the source of power.
Take time to PLAY—it is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to READ—it is the fountain of wisdom.
Take time to PRAY—it is the greatest power on earth.
Take time to LOVE and BE LOVED—it is a God-given privilege.
Take time to BE FRIENDLY—it is the road to happiness.
Take time to LAUGH—it is the music of the soul.
Take time to GIVE—the day is too short to be selfish.
Take time to WORK—it is the price of success.
Take time to SHOW YOU CARE—it is the way of God.
With prayers that all Ambrosians enjoy a happy, healthy and holy spring break! —Fr. Chuck

FAMILY TO ME
Many siblings of our current SAU students come to campus this weekend for another opportunity for us to celebrate family.  It is always a joy to celebrate the bonds of familial love.  But family need not be limited by blood relationships or parental adoption. Catholic social teaching reiterates this time and time again.  In a 1979 pastoral letter, the US Bishops named racism as a sin which mocks the most basic doctrine of Christians: that God became incarnate in Christ, making all human beings siblings to Christ.  Our church leaders stated, “Let all know that racism is a terrible sin that mocks the cross of Christ and ridicules the Incarnation. For the brother and sister of our Brother Jesus Christ are brother and sister to us.”  Speaking to his newly created Cardinals last Sunday, Pope Francis challenged them to lead the way putting no limits on love,  to claim “total openness to serving others” as their only title of honor, and to see Jesus in every person who is excluded.  It’s a powerful message for all of us. Years ago at a conference on music and liturgy I heard composer Marty Haugen perform a song entitled, “One ‘Ohana.”  ‘Ohana is a Hawaiian word for one universal family. I am told it’s also a key theme in the Disney Lilo & Stitch series. “Family” it says, “means nobody gets left behind, and nobody is ever forgotten.”  A perfect goal for us to strive to live this Lenten season. After all, we are all brothers and sisters to one another. ---Fr. Chuck

A WELL-SHAPED HEART
Since this is Valentine’s Day weekend, we are probably noticing hearts and lots of things that are made in heart shapes wherever we look. We find hearts on clothing, on Valentine’s Day cards, in messages sent to our email inboxes. Chances are you can’t overlook many heart-shaped cakes, candies and cookies this weekend. But by Wednesday the attention of Christian people shifts from looking outwardly at things that are heart-shaped to looking inward to the center of our being. On Ash Wednesday we ask, “what shape is my heart in?”  The season of Lent, which begins Wednesday, is a season of grace leading us to change. In his Lenten message for 2015 Pope Francis challenges Christians during Lent to form hearts that are able to love. Francis prays this Lent that we may each develop “a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” The “globalization of indifference” is a phrase used often by Pope Francis to describe the disregard for others that takes control of our world.  Elli Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner once observed, “The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference.”  If we are totally indifferent to the suffering of the poor, to victims of injustice, and to those in our midst dealing with pain, then our hearts are badly out of shape. They are closed to God and closed to our brothers and sisters. On the other hand, during the upcoming season of grace, if all the sacrifices we make, all the devotions we pray, and all the service that we perform can more freely reflect the God who holds all human beings in his own divine heart, then the discipline of Lent will lead to a renewal of our hearts. By the grace of God, our hearts become well-shaped to love.  Prayers for Lenten blessings to all Ambrosians.    ---Fr. Chuck

•Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule for Distribution of Ashes - February 18
Ash Wednesday masses with the distribution of ashes will be offered at 12:00pm, 4:30pm and 9:15pm in Christ the King Chapel. Christian churches of many denominations offer the distribution of ashes in the same manner as Catholics do, symbolizing our desire to use the season of Lent to renew our lives of faith. As such, all Christians are welcome to receive ashes at these masses.

•Understanding the Lenten Fast and Abstinence
FASTING: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Two other smaller meals (not equaling another full meal) are permitted as is drinking of liquids.
ABSTINENCE:  Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.  Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. We are reminded each year that the obligation to do penance on these days is a serious one, but no one should be scrupulous in this regard and if health reasons or the ability to do one’s work is seriously affected, these regulations do not apply.

•LENT at SAU:  Consider these regular activities a part of your Lenten routine:
→Daily Mass:  Mon/Fri at 12 noon;  Tues/Thur at 4:30 pm; Wed at 9:15 pm.

→Stations of the Cross: Booklets for praying the Stations are available under the First Station.  Pray with the Stations in the Chapel any time you like.
→Operation Rice Bowl:  Let your Lent make a difference in the lives of others, and support Catholic Relief Services through the Rice Bowl.  It’s simple - 1) pick up a Rice Bowl at Sunday or Ash Wednesday mass, take it to your room, floor, or home, 2) donate money from your Lenten sacrifices all season long, and 3) bring the Rice Bowl back to the Chapel during Holy Week (March 29 - April 3).  Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.
→Lenten Booklets: Booklets for a reflection, activity, and prayer for each day of Lent are made available in Christ the King Chapel as well as by the mailroom on campus, provided to you by Campus Ministry.  Feel free to take a copy of “Turning Around” and pray along throughout Lent.

NO WORRIES….
There seems to be no shortage of things for people to worry about these days. Students might find themselves with increased anxiety over academic subjects that are becoming more challenging at this point in the semester. Decisions will soon have to be made in regard to next year's course of study, housing, and job situations. Maybe Valentine's Day is even causing a bit of anxiety for some who are less than happy in the area of life giving relationships. Its a good time to be reminded that sometimes we all worry way too much. An interesting statistic that I had saved says that an average person's anxiety is focused 40% on things that will never happen; 30% on things about the past that can't be changed; 12% on criticism by others, mostly untrue; 10% about health, which gets worse with stress; and only 8% about real problems that must be faced. So why do we allow such a small part of life to deplete the energies from all that can brings us joy?  There is an old proverb that says, "Worry pulls tomorrow's cloud over today's sunshine."  At a time in the year when the amount of sunshine is sparse enough the way it is, there is no need to make it even worse?  Let your faith help you put your worries aside. As one of my own spiritual guides used to say, "Every evening I turn my worries over to God. He's going to be up all night anyway."  ---Fr. Chuck

•Brewed Awakening
