Vine and Branches
Jesus frequently uses agrarian images in his preaching: sheep and shepherds, sowers and seed, vine and branches.  This last symbol is particularly worthy of some deeper consideration, as this is the image that Jesus chooses to describe our relationship to him.  It is a vital image, in the truest sense of the word.  That is, it is related to vita, to life.   A branch that has been cut off from the vine will soon wither and die.  In the same way, for Christians - by virtue of our baptism - our very life is now bound up with Christ, the Vine.  In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus doesn’t say, “Without me you can do quite a lot, but I’m a nice guy and everyone needs a little spirituality in their life.”  Rather, he says, “Without me you can do nothing.”  Christ is our life.  This is an especially important reminder for us during this hectic time of the year, as the academic year winds to a close.  What, then, does it take to cultivate this good relationship between Jesus and us, between the vine and the branches?  First of all, it may take some careful pruning, as Jesus himself suggests.  Perhaps there are less than fruitful aspects of our lives, our study or our work that drain us of vital energy that could better be applied elsewhere, and so need to be cut out.  This can also be a good time, as we reflect on the past academic year and look to the future, to more carefully examine our consciences and to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (offered in our chapel before daily Mass).  This “pruning” is not to harm us, though it can seem painful at first, but precisely so that we can bear more fruit.  Another, truly vital way for us to cultivate our relationship with Christ is through prayer.  Jesus says, “Remain in me.”  What better way to begin to remain in him than by first remaining with him in prayer?  These next two Sundays we have a unique opportunity to do this following the 6:30 Mass, as we once again have an hour of Eucharistic adoration.  In this busy time of year, it may seem like we don’t have an hour (or even a few minutes) to spare, but my experience has been that God has an amazing way of manipulating time, such that what time we spend in prayer is measured back out to us in peace, in clarity of purpose, in confidence, energy and joy.  As we enter these last two weeks of the school year, let us remain in Christ, the Vine, our Life, without whom we can do nothing. ---Fr. Thom

•End of Year Chapel Schedule
This coming week (April 29 - May 5) is the last week of regular masses in the Chapel for the academic year.  Sunday, May 6 is the last regular Sunday of the year with masses at 10:30am and 6:30pm.  Monday, May 7 is the last regular daily mass at 12 noon, while on Tuesday, May 8 we will have one last mass for the students at 9pm.  After Tuesday, there will be no more daily masses in the Chapel until the fall semester.  There will be a Sunday 10:30 am mass only on Sunday the 13th.

•Last Wednesday Night Mass and More & Blessing of Pencils
Join us this Wednesday, May 2 at 9:15pm for the final Mass & More of the 2017-2018 year!  We will honor the two seniors who are receiving this year’s Faith Learning Justice awards for their outstanding commitment to Campus Ministry and the values of St. Ambrose University.  We will also have a blessing of pencils (and more importantly, the students that use them!) at the end of mass before finals week.  Come pick up a Campus Ministry pencil or bring your own.  Finally, stick around for the last More of the semester as we have Whitey’s Ice Cream in the Chapel Gathering Space after mass.  Bring your friends, bring your team, or bring your floor to this last Mass & More!

•Music for Commencement Mass
All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to assist with the music for the Commencement Mass on Saturday, May 12 at 9am in the Chapel.  This mass provides a beautiful send-off for our graduates and their families, and is a wonderful SAU tradition.  Rehearsals begin this Thursday, May 3 at 7pm in the Chapel.  People of all skill levels are welcome!  Email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•Service Opportunity with Madison Elementary
Volunteers are needed to help at a May Carnival for the kids at Madison Elementary on Friday May 4th from 4:15-6:30pm. The event is free to all Madison families and around 400 people are expected to attend. Volunteers work with teachers and parents to run games and supervise the inflatable obstacle course.  Madison Elementary is located at the corner of Locust and Brady Sts, so this would be an easy walk to the school with friends!  If you would like to sign up, please contact Dr. Rachael Suddarth at suddarthrachaelm@sau.edu.

•SAU Community Service Hours - Due Monday, May 7
We are asking the entire SAU campus community to help us tabulate all of the hours of service that have been given during the 2017-2018 academic year by our students, faculty, and staff.  Last year, the SAU campus completed an amazing 156,720 hours of service!  In order to document our commitment to service, we need an accurate count of what student groups, classes, and individuals are doing.  Go to https://sau.wufoo.com/forms/log-your-service-hours/ by Monday, May 7 and log hours of service from your class, with a student club, or individual service you did on your own.  Email Kaitlin at ministry@sau.edu with any questions.  Thank you SAU!

•Tuesday, May 8 - Last Weekday Mass at 9 pm and Midnight Breakfast at 10 pm
Bring your friends, bring your floor, or bring your team!  All are welcome at the last daily Mass of the semester on Tuesday, May 8 at 9pm in the Grotto (rain location: Chapel). A blessing will be offered for all who will be graduating. We will conclude in plenty of time for getting in line for Midnight Breakfast in the Cosgrove Cafeteria which begins at 10pm.

•Commencement Mass May 12
Graduates and their families are invited to begin Commencement Day by celebrating Mass at Christ the King Chapel at 9am on Saturday, May 12. The Most Reverend Bishop Thomas Zinkula of Davenport will be the celebrant for the liturgy, and mass will feature a combined choir of SAU students, faculty, and staff.  The Mass will conclude in time for families to enjoy the Brunch in Rogalski Center.  People of all faiths are welcome at this service of thanksgiving and blessing.  Learn more about everything happening for Spring Commencement on the SAU webpage.

•Move Out Collection
STUDENTS!  As you pack up to move out for the summer, do you have clothes, shoes, furniture, or food that you aren’t taking with you?  DON’T THROW IT OUT!  The Peer Campus Ministers are collecting items that are clean and in good condition to donate to families with local community organizations.  They are also collecting non-perishable food as well.  Simply look for donation spots in your Residence Hall and drop off items there until Saturday, May 12.  Email ministry@sau.edu if you have any questions about donatable items.  Thank you from your Peer Campus Ministers, Campus Ministry, and Residence Life!

•Adoration is Back!
Following the 6:30 Mass for the last 2 Sundays of the semester (April 29 and May 6) we will have exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 7:30-8:30 in the Chapel.  Please consider staying after Mass or coming for a short time of quiet prayer in this busy time of the year.  Even if you can only come for 15 or 30 minutes, this is a great way to “reset” and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus as the academic year winds to a close.

The call to good stewardship of creation and of our lives
This Sunday we celebrate a couple of important things.  First, we celebrate Earth Day.  The first Earth Day was held April 22, 1970 and is credited with helping to launch the modern environmental movement.  According to the official Earth Day website, “More than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.”  It is a good reminder to us all to consider more deeply our relationship to the planet we inhabit and to make good personal choices that will help to protect our environment to the extent possible.  We need to be civically and socially aware as well, seeking ways to advocate for sensible environmental policy on a broader level.  As you know, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has been no slouch when it comes to his own advocacy on this issue, especially in his 2015 Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home.  Perhaps this would be worth a re-read (or first read) this week?  Secondly, within the Church, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.  Once again, our Holy Father, has asked that Catholics everywhere pray for a new flowering of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life within the Church.  Of course, this should be our constant task, not just a once a year event (just as being mindful of the environment and making good choices in regard to our use of resources should not be limited to Earth Day).  As the Vocation Director for the Diocese of Davenport (at least for a couple more months), this is something that has been and will continue to be very near and dear to my own heart.  The words of Saint Paul ring in my ears: “How can they call on him in whom they have not believed?  And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?  And how can they hear without someone to preach?” (Romans 10:14).  What do both of these events have in common?  Stewardship.  Ultimately, they are both about how we use the resources and gifts that we have been given, most especially the gift of life itself, in ways that show forth our most authentic human nature and give glory to God.  We are stewards - caretakers - both of our earth and of our lives.  My prayer is that all of us will make a fitting return to the Lord of all that has been entrusted to our care.  ---Fr. Thom

•L’Arche Community Visit Rescheduled!
While they were planning on joining us back in February, snow forced us to reschedule.  This Sunday, April 22, we will be having visitors join us from the L’Arche community in Clinton.  L’Arche is a global community of adults with and without developmental disabilities, and we have one such community in Clinton, IA.  Ambrosians for Peace & Justice have invited the community to join us for 10:30 am Mass, brunch, and an art project on Sunday April 22.  If you would like to join APJ in providing hospitality for our guests, please let Kaitlin know at ministry@sau.edu.

•CRS Rice Bowl
There’s still time to bring back your Rice Bowl - just drop it off in the basket in the Gathering Space.  Your generosity goes to help improve the lives of those in need in the Quad Cities and around the world!

•Tea Time with Mother Teresa - Thursday, April 26
Join a small group of students to learn about Mother Teresa and reflect on her teachings.  Led by Bizzie Braun, this group will meet every Thursday after Easter at 8pm in the Chapel Gathering Space.  Tea and hot cocoa will be provided; bring your own mug!  Email ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•BEESknees
As we draw closer to the end of the year and continue to face end-of-semester stressors, it’s a good time to remember to pray for our SAU community and our collective needs.  BeesKnees is a unique prayer ministry that allows Ambrosians to pray in their own time and manner for confidential intentions presented each week on behalf of fellow Ambrosians.  If you would like to be a part of it, or have intentions to offer, email Beesknees@sau.edu.

Changes big and small
With everything that was going on last weekend between the fantastic conference on St. Ambrose of Milan, the reception of the relics of Saints Ambrose, Protasius and Gervasius at our 10:30 Mass and the celebration of our baptisms and confirmations at the 6:30 Mass (not to mention the fact that I had almost no voice last weekend), I didn’t really have the opportunity to announce to the campus community a small change in my assignment beginning this July.  As you may know, during my time here at St. Ambrose I have also been serving as the Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Davenport, as I have for the last 7 years.  This will change July 1.  I will continue in my assignment here as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry, but Fr. Joseph Sia will become the new vocation director for the Diocese.  I will still be assigned as one of two associate directors of vocations (along with my counterpart, Fr. Jeff Belger, at the Newman Center at the University of Iowa), but I anticipate that most of those duties will be fulfilled within the scope of my present ministry as university chaplain.  Basically, we’re going back to the same arrangement that Fr. Chuck enjoyed before I came.  From the university side of things, you will probably notice little difference, but for me personally it will be a big change.  I so look forward to only having one office, one (primary) job and only having to report to one place each day - right here at St. Ambrose.  I will be able to pour more of my time and energies into this ministry that I have already come to love so dearly in the 9 months that I have been here.  When I came here last July, I had hoped that we would be able to move in this direction.  I am grateful the opportunity came sooner than later.  If you haven’t noticed, there are other changes in the air.  As I write this, it is a beautiful spring day in the 70’s.  Then again, they’re already talking about dropping temperatures and a wintry mix for the weekend.  Change happens fast, especially when it comes to the weather in Iowa.  But this welcome blast of spring reminds us that there isn’t that much left to this school year and even bigger changes are on the way for our seniors.  We’re not there yet, but we’re rounding the corner.   Enjoy the weather (whatever it is) and keep your eye on the prize! ---Fr. Thom

He is risen! Now what?
It was an ancient custom of Christians in both the east and west to greet each other in the Easter season with these words: “He is risen!”  And the appropriate response would be, “As he said!” or “Truly, he is risen!”  Part of me thinks this would be a nice thing to bring back.  At the very least, we should be bold and joyful in saying to each other “Happy Easter!” in these days.  Like Christmas, Easter doesn’t end on Easter day.  In fact, the Easter season goes on for 50 days after Easter (notice, 10 more days than Lent).  In a special way, during the “octave” of Easter we celebrate each day almost as though it was another Easter Sunday.  The point of all of this is to continually remind ourselves that this is the defining event for us as Christians.  We are here...this university is here because a dead man’s body was not where it should have been early on a Sunday morning almost two-thousand years ago -- and not because his body was stolen, as some even then tried to claim, but because he was raised from the dead.  He then appeared to his disciples on numerous occasions, not a ghost or apparition, not as a reanimated corpse, but truly alive!  So, now what?  How do we respond daily to this radical truth of our faith?  This is the challenge before all of us in these days.  I ask myself, “How is my life marked by the resurrection of Jesus? Do I look at the world differently because of my faith in this Jesus of Nazareth who died and is truly risen?  Do I convey in my daily life a sense of hope and joy that nothing in this life can destroy?”  I hope so, but like all of us, I am a “work in progress.”  This Second Sunday of Easter (also “Divine Mercy” Sunday) is an especially joyful celebration for us this year, as at our 10:30 Mass we will welcome many guests who are participating in this weekend’s conference on St. Ambrose, and we will be officially receiving relics of St. Ambrose, as well as two 2nd century martyrs, SS. Gervasius and Protasius, to be permanently displayed in our chapel for public veneration.  Then, at the 6:30 Mass we will baptize our “elect” (those who have been preparing for entrance into the Catholic Church), as well as receive one person into full communion with the Church.  So, there’s a lot to celebrate - above all, that Jesus is risen as he said!  ---Fr. Thom

•Reception of Relics of SS Ambrose, Gervasius, and Protasius
At the 10:30 am mass this Sunday, we will celebrate the reception of relics of saints Ambrose, Gervasius, and Protasius to their new permanent home in Christ the King Chapel.  The relics will be installed at the end of mass below the Fr. Catich etching of the bishop St. Ambrose near the Chapel doors.  Most Rev. Thomas Zinkula, bishop of Davenport and chair of the Board of Trustees, will be here to celebrate this important moment with us.  This is part of the Academy for the Study of St. Ambrose of Milan’s conference this weekend.  All are welcome to the celebration!

•Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation
This weekend we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation at the 6:30 pm Mass.  Cameron Smith and Blain Samuelson will be baptized and confirmed.  We will also welcome Bailey Weber into full communion of the Catholic Church with a profession of faith and the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion.   Evelyn Nuñez will also be confirmed on Sunday.   The candidates met together throughout the past year to explore the Sunday Scriptures and experience the Catholic way of life.  We congratulate them and welcome them with great joy!  If you are interested in learning more about becoming Catholic or preparing for the sacraments, please email ministry@sau.edu.

•Service on Saturday
The Service on Saturday service project on Saturday 4/14 will be in the Project Renewal neighborhood, around 6th & Warren Streets.  Project Renewal has their annual Fit Fest obstacle run (save the date to help the morning of 4/21!), so we'll be getting the streets and park areas ready for the kids, families and supporters to safely run, jump, and leap through the course. The times will be 9-11am on Saturday 4/14.  Let us know if you can join us at ministry@sau.edu.

•CRS Rice Bowl
There’s still time to bring back your Rice Bowl - just drop it off in the basket in the Gathering Space.  Your generosity goes to help improve the lives of those in need in the Quad Cities and around the world!

•Welcome Busy Student Retreat Guides
We are pleased to welcome Sr. Marilyn Breen, PBVM; Fr. Herald Fisher, OMI; Sr. Stefanie MacDonald, OSB; Sr. Marlene Miller, OSB; Sr. Lynn Mousel, CHMI; and Sr. Margaret Murphy, OSB to campus as spiritual guides for this semester’s Busy Student Retreat.  Approximately 40 students will be meeting with the spiritual guides this week to reflect on scripture and the movement of God in their lives.   Please keep the directors and students in your prayers this week.

•Tea Time with Mother Teresa
Join a small group of students to learn about Mother Teresa and reflect on her teachings.  Led by Bizzie Braun, this group will meet every Thursday after Easter, starting April 5, at 8pm in the Chapel Gathering Space.  Tea and hot cocoa will be provided; bring your own mug!  Email ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•CommUNITY day
The 4th annual CommUNITY day to do service in our neighborhoods is almost here.  Think of it as a springtime version of Bee the Difference Day with yard clean-up projects.  CommUNITY day will be Sunday 4/15 beginning with a lunch at noon and service projects in the afternoon.  Individuals or teams can sign up at https://www.qcbt.bank/community-day.

•Music for Commencement Mass
All SAU students, faculty, and staff are invited to assist with the music for the Commencement Mass on Saturday, May 12 at 9am in the Chapel.  Most Reverend Thomas Zinkula, Bishop of Davenport, will be the celebrant for the liturgy.  This mass provides a beautiful send-off for our graduates and their families, and is a wonderful SAU tradition.  Rehearsals begin Thursday, May 3, in the Chapel.  People of all skill levels welcome!  Email Chris Clow at ministry@sau.edu to sign up.

•College Reading Buddies
Are you interested in working on reading skills with an elementary student?  A teacher at Grant Wood Elem in Bettendorf is setting up a reading buddy program. College reading buddies would only need to come into class three times in the remaining weeks of the semester:
Friday, April 6th 2:00-3:00pm - Introduction and book looking
Friday, April 13th 2:00-3:00pm - Book reading and discussion
Friday, May 4th 2:00-3:00pm - Wrap up and celebrate
If you would be interested in going with a club, group of friends, or just by yourself, please let Kaitlin know at ministry@sau.edu.
