Lived Out in Love
The Gospel this Sunday is a tough one, as Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees about divorce.  Divorce is a reality that affects almost all families, my own included.  We know what a gut-wrenching experience this can be for couples, their children, their families and their friends.  Sadly, we also know that the alternative (staying married) is not always a realistic option, especially when there is a situation of abuse.  Even the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “If civil divorce remains the only possible way of ensuring certain legal rights, the care of the children, or the protection of inheritance, it can be tolerated and does not constitute a moral offense” (2383).  I recently read that divorce rates have declined in the United States, though not necessarily because people are choosing to stay married, but because fewer and fewer people are getting married in the first place.  I suppose one way to ensure that a lifelong commitment will never be broken is to never to enter into one, but this misses the point.  In responding to the Pharisees, Jesus harkens back to the original, beautiful vision of marriage as laid out in the first chapters of Genesis.  Marriage is a very serious thing and should not be entered into lightly or without adequate preparation, but it is also a beautiful thing when lived out day by day in that conscious choice to love the other “in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health” all the days of one’s life.  Let’s pray this week for all families who have experienced divorce, for their healing; for all married couples, for their perseverance; and for all those preparing for marriage, for their prudence.  Fr. Thom

The Fruit of a Life Lived in Gratitude to God
The readings for this Sunday remind us that what has been given to us by God, whether spiritual or material, is not for our exclusive possession. When someone objected to Moses that the spirit of God had fallen upon two men who were “outside the camp,” Moses responded: “Would that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them all!”  Similarly, when some of Jesus’ disciples objected that someone who was not a part of their group was doing great things in his name, he rebuked them, saying: “Do not prevent him...For whoever is not against us is for us.” The second reading for this Sunday, from the Letter of James, pulls in the material aspect of this as well, reminding us that material wealth in time will rot away, but justice toward our neighbor endures.  The bottom line is this: (1) all our gifts, material or spiritual, have been given to us by God; (2) we should not resent the gifts given to others by God; and (3) all that has been given to us is, in turn, to be given for others. In this sense, the Christian life can rightly be seen through the lens of stewardship. Unfortunately, this word has too often been associated only with material giving, when it is meant to be an all-encompassing way of life.  Sharing of ourselves and our gifts to the church or to causes and organizations (or universities) that are dear to us should be the natural fruit of a life lived in gratitude to God.  I think this can especially be applied to the gift of education. And so, whether we are still in school or many years removed from our formal education, let’s pledge ourselves anew to this stewardship.  Fr. Thom

Happy Homecoming!
I have always found it strange that at Homecoming many of our alumni actually leave home to come here and celebrate with us.  Also, many of our students - particularly our newest students - may still struggle to identify St. Ambrose as “home.”  And yet, when we think of the feelings we get from home, wherever that may be for us, I think we get many of those same feelings when we return to this place.  I certainly felt that way last year when I came back as Chaplain.  As much as had changed in my time away and in all of the bewilderment of that transition, there was still a powerful feeling of home.  I have maintained ties with a number of my friends and faculty from my time here as a student and I know that they feel the same.  A vivid reminder of this came for me last spring when I brought a group of students down to northern Mississippi for one of our spring break service trips.  On our free day we were able to zip up to Memphis to see some of the sites and were graciously invited to dinner at the home of one of our many alumni couples who met here as students.  There was an instant bond.  After all, we share a home: St. Ambrose.  As we celebrate Homecoming this weekend, I hope and pray that Ambrosians past and present will preserve that common bond that derives from the many meaningful experiences we have had, the memories we share and the friends we have made here at our common home.  Fr. Thom.
