Take Time for God
In talking to students this past week, it was clear that the “honeymoon” period of the start of the school year is abruptly coming to an end.  For most of them, the first round of papers, tests and projects have already come due or soon will.  This is inevitable, of course.  In fact, it is the main reason our students are here: to learn, so that in time they can go forth from here and, as our mission statement says, enrich the lives of others.  I have to admit, I really miss being in the classroom and being able to learn in a more structured environment.  Part of me would love to go back to college.  But, as I heard about all that the students were having to do this past week, I quickly realized that, while I miss learning in the classroom setting, I don’t particularly miss having to be accountable for that learning.  As someone who considers himself a “lifelong learner” I prefer to “audit” and to go at my own pace, even if I am not always as disciplined as I would like to be about it.  It occurs to me that that as the academic year ramps up, this is also the time of year when our relationship with God might easily be put on the “back burner.”  I would strongly caution against this.  In my experience, making time for prayer, for daily conversation with God, has never robbed me of the time or energy I needed to accomplish whatever work was before me.  On the contrary, I have always found that prayer gives me greater perspective, focus, energy and peace in going about my daily responsibilities.  I believe this is more than just the psychological effect of prayer, but truly the working of the Holy Spirit.  And so, as the “machine” of academia really begins to hum, don’t forget to take time for God: in prayer, in retreat opportunities, by going to Sunday Mass (and maybe even the occasional weekday Mass), in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or just in a peaceful stroll under the oaks on a beautiful early fall day.  Let us keep each other in prayer.   ---Fr. Thom

•Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Training
A training session for both new and experienced Eucharistic Ministers will be Sunday, September 17th after the 10:30 am and 6:30 pm Masses.  If you are interested in serving in this important ministry please plan to attend one of the training sessions.  This ministry is reserved for practicing, confirmed Catholics.  Please contact us at ministry@sau.edu for more information.

•Collection for Victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma
Campus Ministry is collecting donations to go to Catholic Charities and benefit those affected by the hurricanes in recent weeks.  Catholic Charities sends 100% of their donated funds directly to help those in need to the diocese affected.  Donations can be sent to Campus Ministry through campus mail (memo: Hurricane Relief), or you can also donate online by going to catholiccharitiesusa.org.  A small donation can make a big difference.

•Service on Saturday
Our Service on Saturday project this weekend will be with kids living at Family Resources.  We have been invited to be pen pals with kids living at the Fairmount Pines community.   If you would like to be a monthly pen pal with a kid in 4-8th grade, join us on Saturday September 16th at 10am in the Chapel Gathering Space.  We'll explain the project, assign pen pals, and you can write your first letter.  Note that this is a monthly commitment throughout the school year - Saturday is just the kick-off.   Email ministry@sau.edu to join in!

•Other Service Opportunities
We received a note that Project Renewal’s after-school Youth Program is in need of some help this semester.  Project Renewal is an after-school program here in Davenport.  Kids come everyday after school for help with homework and reading, a snack, and privileges to play computer games, board games, and outside at their park.  The after school program is Monday-Friday from 2:30-5:30.  If you’re interested in helping out, even for an hour or two, please let us know at ministry@sau.edu and we’ll get you more information.

A literacy program in Rock Island at the Church of Peace is looking for volunteers with their adult English education classes, for the ESL classes and with childcare during the class times.  Many of the adults in their program are refugees learning English, so they would appreciate your help as experts in the language. Volunteers are needed between 9-noon Monday-Thursdays as you are available.  Please let us know if you are interested at ministry@sau.edu and we’ll get you more information.
